MP3 Sky Cooper - Wednesday

A fresh breeze, adapting folk, jazz, rock, and funk influences to create a unique style, the result is a tasty new flavour in contemporary songwriting.

10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Funk Rock, ROCK: Modern Rock

Details:
"Wednesday" is a collection of songs ranging in style from choppy jazz (windows), low indie (22, may), bluesy rock (better days), acoustic funk hop (vision), and shady neofolk genres in between (humming in grays, threes). The album paints 24 hours trying to organize rehearsals, catch up with friends, and still squeeze some time in for set obligations. Meanwhile messages from wednesday interupt to conduct the songs and sketch the day.

Me? I was born in Sydney, Australia.
At the age of three I moved to Boston, USA, and then returned to Sydney at 10. Those seven years stuck in my accent and co-opted a return at 19 to study music at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.

In the following four years at college I explored different genres, gigging with various groups and solo artists throughout the Pioneer Valley: different jazz combos, a Funkadelic cover band, the Cas Lucas Blues Band, Toby Driver''s progressive metal outfit Kayo Dot, (now on John Zorn''s label Tzadik), The Blend, and a quilted fusion group: Ghosthouse, which drew inspiration from my classes with music legend Yusef Lateef.

After leaving Western Massachusetts I gigged around Boston and the San Francisco Bay Area, holed up in a crumbling haight street hostel. Serving food as a "safari guide" I caved in, scrambling home to Australia after a cloudy eviction. With a couple bucks in my pocket i got to Sydney airport without a passport, but ran into a mate from the pub at customs; "Welcome home". First round''s on me.

By mid 2000 I was doing some street busking in Sydney and ended up giving several live solo performances on Sydney radio before heading north to the Laura festival (QLD). Tracking dust back from the bush to a house in Townsville, I started gigging in North Queensland from August to Oct 2001. It started with some elders (bass player was 86) who needed some rhythm guitar for their blue grass group, and bled into a cheesy pub cover band. I started working as a roadie for others and salvaged some inspiration from saturday solo gigs singing to unsuspecting customers at a deceased city center cafe to the sound of silence.

Couch surfing like a gypsy for a couple years, I shuttled back to the Bay Area and teamed up with some local friends to record something on my mind-the Coffeehouse EP- January 2002. But by now my back pack was getting small, shoulders rusted, and all my socks sported heel holes. When I spent Australia Day (Jan 26th) digging my clothes out of the rubble of an exploded laundromat, I settled on a future of job security, and a washing machine of my own.

At night with a fever I sat in on a blues jam in the tenderloin which got me a money jazz trio gig. Making the most of messy musical wall paper at a restaurant on Ocean Beach with some swift cats, I packed and caught a greyhound to Portland Oregon overnight chasing a job lead on Valentines day.

Following a rainy arrival I sanded table tops for six months and booked a summer circle solo tour around the country. Three days before I set out in my musty jetta I quit my job, left my lease, and cashed my checks. Now confident I was on my way, I lost my wallet and address book. Dismayed, I drove to eat lunch at the park and I crashed into a passing car driven by a woman from human resources.

Tour busted.

Flew to boston to resume floor warming and vendored folk festivals. Saw summer 2002 set, took a breath, and bought a brew at the Plough and Stars. Keen for Portland, I returned to start again...

...and this is where I now mop floors in a hospital cafeteria. But on the upbeat I founded the independent label Kemai Records in 2003 for the release of my first full length album "Wednesday". Although I haven''t learned to write bio''s successfully in the third person, I''m currently working on a second full length album with my new band Dorado. Want more music? Check out the garage, we upload new MP3s weekly.

-if you rolled with the ramble this far; thanks, i hope you dig the tunes!
