Damen Samuel was born and raised in former communist East Germany. His musical journey had its beginnings at the mischievous age of two when he and his older brother secretively listened to forbidden radio programmes from West Germany and far away America. Damen’s love for music progressed into his childhood and adolescent years when he created his first tunes by mixing his childhood fairytale records with music rarities obtained from the black market. This was done with the help of his mother’s old record player, and bulky cassette player.
Against the political backdrop of his country, Damen Samuel turned to pen and paper to describe the world through his own eyes. His early expressions quickly turned from poetry into songwriting. After fruitless pursuits in various rock bands, Damen Samuel discovered the power of storytelling through his writing and the acoustic guitar. So began his journey as a singer/songwriter.
He arrived in New York City in 2002 and quickly became part of the local music scene of downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn. He was able to refine his songwriting and performing skills by regularly appearing at various venues.
In 2005 Damen Samuel recorded a short set of songs under the title “Storyteller”. He promoted “Storyteller” throughout parts of North America and Europe in 2006.
Alongside his solo career, he formed the music project “Bitter Wine” with his long time friend Lord Toph in New York.
Currently he is based in Melbourne (Australia) where he just finished his new CD “A Gypsy’s Lullaby”. He is also writing and recording new material for “Sound of Grey” an electric-pop duo that he founded with trance/Pop producer Ronnie Minder early this year.
Damen Samuel’s music in an instance reveals a nature of both sensuality and sadness. Vocally the lyrics to many of his songs have a subtly heavy velvety resonance. In each song, he clearly reveals a story in a folk-like fashion reminiscent to that of Cat Stevens, Leonard Cohen, and Tim Buckley. Yet much like his predecessors of contemporary music, his style stands uniquely alone. Of course Damen Samuel is no stranger to "standing alone." Like the great storytellers of our time, Damen Samuel has his own "tale to tell."
