Diane Miessler (that would be me) is an aging hippie chick who cut her musical teeth on Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. My voice is most often compared with one of those, but I’m trying to branch out into more jazz and bluegrass. I play guitar, piano and, alas, banjo, and now write most of my own material.
I first gathered the courage to sing in front of someone at age 16, spending the night at a girlfriend’s who was teaching me guitar. She overheard me singing a Judi Collins song from the other room, and said she thought the record was on; I began to think maybe I could do this in public. I eventually got up the nerve to do so, and have gotten enough encouraging feedback to make this CD.

I wrote my first song at 22, back when I thought unrequited love was fatal. As with most songwriters, I suspect, my early songs were about my personal angst – generally related to lost love, love gone cold, unrequited love. . . you get the picture. MY angst, was, of course, much worse than anyone else’s angst. The same might be said of my early songs. . .
My songwriting has since expanded into other genres: political satire, social commentary, the loss of a parent, managing through difficult times. My song “Destiny”, about a feral child being “raised” (“kept” would be more accurate) by some meth-addicted neighbors, won an Honorable Mention in the Unisong International Songwriting Contest, and was featured in a local documentary. It’s one people describe as heartrending. (Destiny – not her real name – is now living with her grandmother, and is doing well). I wouldn’t say my head is swelling, given my baseline self-doubt, but it’s now less shrunken. I call this progress.
There are still, of course, songs about love, albeit from a more feminist standpoint. Ambivalent love, love that’s too confining, and – this is novel for me – requited love. Who’da thunk?
I hope you find this album uplifting, fun, thought-provoking, and moving. That’s what I’m shootin’ for.
