Former experimental theater actress, veteran of the acoustic coffeehouse circuit, one-time political activist, single mom and erstwhile lounge singer, Celia Slattery''s music combines the sincerity of folk with the sophistication of jazz. The themes Celia expresses range from the political to the personal, and reflect an optimistic spirit which has been tested by adversity.
Influenced by the topical singer-songwriters of the 60''s, Celia first picked up a guitar and began singing as a rebellious teenager. At age 16 she dropped out of school to join the antiwar movement in Washington DC. A single mother at age 19, Celia managed to put herself through school, earning a degree in theater and piecing together a career in performing arts. As a solo acoustic act, she performed in clubs throughout New England, including Passim in Cambridge, Mass. and The Iron Horse in Northampton, as well as playing in many cheesy bars. Later, she returned to school to earn her Masters Degree, combining Theater with Voice and Jazz Studies at New England Conservatory. The bars got a little better, including a seven-month stint singing at the Bamboo Bar in the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, often cited as world''s #1 hotel.
Celia created a one woman musical theater piece based on her experiences growing up in the 60''s and 70''s. The show, Moving Target, as well as its sequel What''s Goin'' On? have been performed in theaters, schools and festivals including: First Night Boston, The Montreal Fringe Festival and Jimmy Tingle''s Off Broadway Theater (Somerville, MA). She has performed in many Boston - area clubs like Ryles, the Acton Jazz Café and Johnny D''s, as well for many special events. Celia released her debut CD Movin'' On in 2001 and a second CD, Cover Story is due to be released next year.
