Details:
Most songs of ''A bumpy ride'', the second album of the Dutch singer/ songwriter Sleepy Joe Tomato, were recorded in the summer of 1995, in the small 16-track studio of the producer/musician Scott Mathews in San Francisco. It took Scott and SJT about two weeks to record and mix the album. On some tracks it''s just Scott and SJT playing all the instruments (for example ''She turned into a stranger'', ''Love on the side'' and ''Just in time''). Scott is an amazing drummer, who played on a lot of records (The Beach Boys, John Lee Hooker, John Hiatt) but he is also a fine bassplayer, keyboard player and guitarist (and songwriter). On some tracks the duo got help from Dave Ristrim (pedal steel guitar and slideguitar) and Marc Capelle(mellotron).
All songs were written by Joan Ter Maten (who also sings and plays guitar and bass). The music is rootsy: there is some r&b-ish music (e.g. ''Just in time''), rock ''n'' roll Chuck Berry style (''Love on the side''), jazzy blues (''My baby''s shrink'') and straight poptunes (''She turned into a stranger'', ''Dreamgirls'').
Scott produced, recorded and mixed nine of the songs in San Francisco; two songs were recorded in Amsterdam (with different musicians) and produced by SJT.
