Sometimes Paul is the brainchild of Alice Bohn (vocals, keys) and C Gilchrist (vocals, everything else). This collection of original tunes was written by them over the course of 18 months during 2000 & 2001. It covers such a wide variety of styles and genres that it''s probably best to describe each song separately, rather than to try to describe the cd as a whole.

"i am your soap" starts off the cd with a jazz/funk groove and a perverse little lyric about being used up by a lover and enjoying every minute of the abuse. "mary and margaret" is up next, with a bright, fun poppy feel and impenetrable lyrics about a childhood memory of Alice''s. This is the first standout track on the cd; with it''s Beatlesque hooks, it''s a favorite for live performances. After that comes "insecurity", which details how some people seem capable of robbing us of our confidence, to an insistent, heavy guitar-rock track. Fourth up is "this is life", a candid admission of how instructive sluttines can be, set to a slow, anthemic hip-hop groove. "prison in demand" is the fifth track, and one of my favorites. It combines a throbbing jungle beat with Indian-scale harmonies and a lyric about the pleasures of surrendering your passions to another. Add a dash of early Van Halenesque guitar work into the middle break, and the result is surprisingly coherent and enjoyable.

"nightingale" is the sixth track - a wistful remembrance set to Moby-inspired vocal samples nestled in a bed of acoustic-flavored beat-heavy pop. Following that is the delicate "lover is time" which offers almost-random lyrical snippets interwoven into a comfortable acoustic guitar-based groove. "project 18" pulls a 180-degree changeup with it''s hypnotic, pulsing house synth-bass-n-drum groove and Shelley Glover featured on vocals. Following that tune comes "eggshell" with it''s gentle worldbeat loops and lyrics which create an atmosphere of fragile vulnerability. "skin on skin" is up next, bringing us a heavy, discordant warning of the dangers of falling in love during casual sex. Perhaps as a balance to that topic, "feelin'' it" is a joyous little swing tune extolling the smutty pleasures of driving one''s auto single-handed. This is the most popular of the band''s repertoire, with audiences often demanding that it be played two or three times a night.

"can''t shut up" is probably the least-realized song in the collection. Intended as another drum-n-bass dance rave-up, it falls short due to it''s mechanical lack of dynamics. But after it comes the tongue-in-cheek "no more", a comedic parody written in the style of Brittney Aguilera. Finishing up the cd is the unabashed straight-ahead rocker "alligator purse", with it''s driving cowbell and singalong chorus.

All in all it''s an eclectic and ambitiously wide-ranging collection, executed for the most part with wit and style. Even the title is a wink and a nudge; for a home studio-produced effort it''s a very polished product. The musical styles are all over the map, but the lyrical content maintains coherence by staying mainly focused upon sex, relationships, sex, betrayal, sex, masturbation, sex and more sex.

Each cd is lovingly hand-crafted by C Gilchrist himself, who aside from playing most of the instruments, also engineered the recording, did all the artwork and individually burns each cd on his home computer. No shrinkwrap or barcodes here, folks - this is strictly indie homestyle music at it''s most undisciplined and creative.
