Influenced by drum ''n bass and trance grooves by progressive DJ''s, "Exploration" trips with psychedelic tones from across the universe. Fans of Digweed, FSOL, The Chemical Brothers and Detroit Techno will appreciate SpaceScape''s "Exploration".

Space Scape, a trio based in Detroit''s Northern-most ''burbs, is an apt name for the dark, eerie and echo-laden electronic sounds on their new EX- PLOR-A-TION album. The local group''s musical style bounces in zero-gravity between abstract, industrial and standard four-on-the-floor techno. EX-PLOR- A-TION''s flight path resembles a combination of Future Sound of London (FSOL) and the sterile, reverb-heavy warehouse rave music of the mid-90s. Beyond the swirling, scraping electronic sounds, Space Scape incorporates guitar, a didgeridoo, vocoders, tweaked sound-bite samples and occasional vocals. On one hand, the music of EX-PLOR-A-TION is ambitious and creative; in particular, some of the drumbeats are very intelligent. However, the songs lack melodies, and more often than not, the layers of static, blips and bleeps just sort of fade into the blackness of space. This is not to say that EX-PLOR-A-TION can''t be enjoyed. The album has its moments, but overall, it would serve better as the soundtrack to a sci-fi movie than something you actually sit down and listen to.
Reason to Buy: You like FSOL and industrial music, or you are watching 2001: A Space Odyssey on mute, and need some musical accompaniment.
Best Listening Experience: "''Platz Musique Garten."

Spacescape densely mixes assorted vocal styles with sci-fi e-grooves, and more... A flatlined robot chorus sings against the darktronic rhythms of Order Within Chaos. Dream-pop vibes flow through Peace & Love (ATT), "sweetened" even further by cheerily crooned popvocals. Diva-choruses back Resurrection Drone''s disco drive. Mechanistic mists and distant drums flow through trancey Exploration (8:33) with fidgety electron ripples; occasionally, cyborg, alien and human voices recite various "-tion" words.
Cruise to dark neon stars on Project Blue Book''s powered-up percussion and celestial theremin waves, though you''ll be wondering "what the hell is that?" (thanks to spoken words to that effect). Brief drone-falling interlude Docking (0:27) drops into the most-seductive zone of Platz Musique Garden, where a she-bot-guide voice seeps into a thrummingly bass-heavy space-noir mix. Fun! The subtler (though still quite active) wisps of Transport De L''Space are appreciably more mesmerizing, with softer beats and no words. Star-lounge closer Nova makes for an even-more- relaxing ending. Interesting (if sometimes a bit kooky) work from Timothy C. Harrison, Bill Johnston, Jr., Rick J. Ritts and friends, who blend stiff doses of "space" sounds/music with beats/ voices, sometimes rather strongly for my own tastes (particularly in the earlier tracks)...
