MP3 Stephen Paul Dix with Logan05 - Kill Me I'm An Optimist (Best of 1999-2004)

Logan05 are difficult to describe , but I''ll try . Lead singer and principle songwriter Stephen Paul Dix is influenced by post punk bands of the 70''s and 80''s . The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen are a huge influence , but David Bowie is the most obvious.

Kill Me I''m An Optimist

In October of 1999 about 1 and a half years after the demise of his former band Stephen Paul Dix began recording a handful of new songs with an old friend. On these songs Stephen would be playing guitar, keyboards, fretless bass, and ..... yes he would be singing . He hadn''t sung at all for over 6 years (when he was the front man for New Jersey band Martian Scoundrels). "We got off to a slow start musically , and especially vocally, by the end of the sessions everyone was fairly pleased , but I recognized this was merely a good starting point."2 songs from those sessions made it on this collection Runway Ghost, and Pale Blue Solitude. While you can hear him strain here and there his vocals have a certain vulnerability that somehow worked perfect for those songs.

By the Spring of 2000 Stephen was again fronting a band, this time it was Brother Orchid. The band only lasted 9 months, but it got Stephen singing in front of live audiences. The band parted amicably and bassist Carlo Bufano played bass, and piano as well as singing backing vocals on the 2001 sessions that yielded Cold Outside Your Heart, and Nobody Gets It (he is also responsible for that awesome bridge in The Son of Superman). Guitarist James Fox leant his unique style to the 2002 recording of Star Crossed. "That was a magic session James was brilliant , he bought his girlfriend Darcy Martin with him , and she sang backups , we did the vocal arrangements on the spot."
Star Crossed is also the song where people began comparing his vocals to David Bowie . "I was kind of embarrassed by that , I mean Bowie is my hero . I thought I sounded good but unworthy of such praise , still I knew I had come a long way."

In December of 2002 Stephen met guitarist Troz and they formed the band Flesh Cartoons which evolved into Logan05. In this band Stephen shared lead vocal duties with Laine Scandalis . "I loved having a female back me up , We developed a chemistry , and I think the Logan 05 recordings are the best I''ve done." Indeed this collection is more or less a Logan05 CD with a brief history of how he got there .

Finally this CD includes 3 new songs Morning Song is a beautiful melodic acoustic guitar instrumental, Suzy and Elliott is a song written for the late Elliott Smith and a former co/worker who died of cancer . The most unique recording experience happened over the summer of 2004."I was visiting family in NJ , Carlo who now lives in Maine came down to see me, and we hooked up with Bob Stanfield who was in the band Natasha with me, and Tim Deckman who played guitar for Martian Scoundrels. We wrote and recorded Comical Misconception in one evening. I loved that song and simply had to include it in this collection.

"I''m very proud of this CD, I think there is something for everyone on it. It is a very accurate representation of where I''ve been, and where I''m going. "
