To date, SPYPLANE is not under contract or obligation to any existing label or record company. The band is comprised of former Boise, ID residents Todd Sloan and Joshua Gilmore, Kevin Past of Granite Falls, WA, and New York Native, Adrian Esguerra.
Prior to founding spyplane, Todd Sloan played with band mates Gilmore and Past under the moniker International. That incarnation of the band self-released 3 EP Demos: International "Air", "Self Titled," and "Chummer." International transitioned into spyplane . SPYPLANE self released a 12 song LP in the summer of 2003. Spyplane creates a grander musical experience, which quickly attracts fans upon immediate exposure. Songwriter
Todd Sloan is an ever-maturing craftsman of guitar-fueled indie-pop rock. Todd is inspired by internalized responses to changing environments and relationships, rather than his musical contemporaries and jukebox heroes. The music he creates is deliberate and sincere. The group dynamics are well balanced, with Darin Sorenson''s highly technical guitar sensibility matching Todd''s pop perfectionism. The creative freedom established by Joshua Gilmore and Kevin Past as the rhythm & percussive elements are cleverly integrated into the mix resulting in a fresh band with tight, melodic cohesion.
SPYPLANE''s sound travels the airspace between epic, crowd-shaking, rock anthems to more intimate, country-fried, campfire sing-a-long. As this band continues, more musical terrain will be exposed and spyplane will deliver it to our ears.

Unlike many of the https://www.tradebit.com staff, there isn''t a 20-50 disc CD changer in my house. There''s no need for one. I''m the type of person who listens to one album over and over and over (you get the idea.) I absorb it, I analyze it, I listen to it to death. So when spyplane''s Bassist Josh Gilmore handed me their sample album at our June label release party at Chop Suey, I dutifully listened to it at least twenty times before committing pencil to paper.
spyplane is a band rich in instrumental expertise and catchy tunes, I have high hopes for this band. The instrumental high and lows throughout their songs caused my foot to tap on the floor and my head to nod rhythmically which is always a sign of a great album.
I''m curious how the band sounds like and what they do on their full length album, communications are down, due out in local stores by August. If they continue to grow, spyplane is gonna go places.

Hopeful, young, exploring and trying - these are the first adjectives that come to mind when I try and describe Spy Planes full-length release "Communications Are Down." This CD was a welcome surprise. Their music embodies those adjectives and is a good representation and outfit for the lyrics that Todd Sloan writes.
Their music comes off as very catchy, but not too obvious or uncreative, as most catchy music does. It is clear, from Spy Plane''s various styles of songs, that they hold a pleasantly large library of influences. Some songs, musically, would come off as emo while others are hootie-meets-jason-mraz happy and still others, almost, metal. Throughout all their songs, though, there is a sort of 70''s feelings that ties them all together. I believe that Bread may be one of the many bands in that library.
The thing that caught me the most about their CD, at first listen, was the production. The recording quality is mediocre with too much separation between the instruments, making them sound like they are playing very clearly, but in different rooms. The production and ideas, on the other hand, are more advanced and clever, choosing wisely where to place shakers, leads, hand claps and even sound effects ("Pinball"). I, personally, am not a big fan of ''sound effects'' in songs, but they pull it off well by placing it in the right places and taking it out when it would be too distracting.
They play a lot with dynamics ranging from angry to funky to triumphant, and they do it all well. They don''t come off as trying too hard, but like they have given it a lot of heart. The rhythm and lead guitars play nicely together, fitting with each other and not standing out from what the other is playing or from where the song is going. The whole band seems to play that way. It''s a bummer that the recording doesn''t do that characteristic more justice. With the type of quality in vision for their songs, how big they think, I really look forward to hearing what Spy Plane does as they move on to bigger and better things (and hopefully, better studio''s, they deserve it).
With the exception of some loose ended rhythm playing that gets a little off beat and some distracting lyrical choices, ''Communications Are Down'' is a great demo and taste of what this band is capable of. I don''t imagine this recording getting to far from me anytime soon.
