Once upon a time in the hills of Cincinnati, four brothers developed and diligently practiced their own special spin on Rock and Roll. Fast forward to 2002 and you have The Stapletons - a thriving Twang and Roll quartet who in a relatively short period of time has won not only the loyalty of dedicated fans throughout the region and numerous awards but also the often hard to come by praise of press and critics. Here is their story...
The four brothers who comprise The Stapletons - Jody on lead vocals and guitar, Newky on lead guitar and backing vocals, Lance on bass and backing vocals, and Mick handling the drums - officially unveiled their special blend of swirling harmonies and rootsy rock in September of 1999. Immediate comparisons were made from bands like the Byrds to the Replacements to all of the obvious modern alt. country acts. Despite all the flattering comparisons, however, it is hard to label The Stapletons unique sound. Many critics have tried calling The Stapletons version of rock "jangly", "loose", and "Beatlesque". Perhaps City Beat magazine music editor Mike Breen described best how fresh The Stapletons sound is when he wrote, "When you hear a Stapletons song there is no mistaking who you are listening to."
The Stapletons debut EP, Electric Record, was released in the Spring of 2000. The official CD release at local Cincinnati favorite the Mad Frog was a highly anticipated event by their already growing fan base thanks to not only their instant notoriety for incredible live shows but also the continued hype of the press. Shortly after the capacity crowd release show, The Stapletons exploded.
The brothers lived up to the hype immediately-- drawing large crowds at all the regular Cincinnati rooms and also taking their show on the road building a regional fan base from Nashville to Columbus and points between. The Stapletons also began playing the most sought after shows in the city by headlining the Parlour stage at the annual Popopolis festival, headlining the inaugural Uprooted festival, headlining the CAMMY stage at the annual Taste of Cincinnati, and being chosen as the opening act for Buckcherry at Pepsi Jammin on Main. Cuts from Electric Record enjoyed regular spins on regional stations such as WOXY(97X), WAIF, and WNKU. Even greater success was on the horizon, however, when The Stapletons took top honors for Best New Artist at both the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards (which are fan chosen) and The Cincinnati Enquirer CAMMY Awards (which are critic chosen). These two awards drove home the already obvious - The Stapletons had laid definite claim to the hearts of fans and critics alike.
The Stapletons are not prone to complacency, however, and hot on the heels of all this success came their first full-length release, "Spirit of ''76" in the Fall of 2001. "Spirit of ''76" was one of the most anticipated releases of the year and was named one of the Top 25 CDs of 2001 in City Beat magazine. Spirit of ''76 was immediately embraced by fans, radio, and the press as well as television where The Stapletons were several times featured performers. Spirit of ''76 definitely catapulted The Stapletons to an even higher level, and the band has since shared billing with numerous national acts and has taken home more CEA and CAMMY awards.
The Stapletons have just finished their third official release, "Low Dealers...and Hangers On" on 3rd Silo Records.
