The dynamics of the show include hard-hitting rock numbers as well as beautiful ballads that are soft as a morning sunrise. A STARCHILD performance is a live wire explosion of musical cultivation that delivers positive vibes out of the venue''s doors and on to the streets.
STARCHILD is guitarist/vocalist Henry Gutierrez, bassist Greg Rhoads and drummer Shawn O''Banion. Each member of the group has lived an impressive and extensive musical history that has combined to create their undeniable chemistry, which speaks for itself.
Henry Gutierrez is the creative vocalist and daring lead guitarist for STARCHILD. Before STARCHILD was formed, he toured the United States with his 15-piece funk orchestra Gingbreadmen. On the road he opened for greats such as Fishbone, Soul Live, Medeski, Martin & Wood and for legends like the P-Funk All Stars, War, Tower of Power, Taj Mahal, Roy Ayers, Government Mule, Maceo Parker and Tito Puente at the 1996 Atlanta, GA Olympics. He later moved to New York where he joined forces with poetic lyricist Mollie King & Lotus 33 to produce an amazing recording entitled " Song of the Cyclone". He has recorded and performed with several NYC artists and has most recently completed the debut STARCHILD CD.
The fervent percussionist Shawn O’Banion is the interlocking man of the group. Intrigued with the Godfather of Soul James Brown, the funk of Tower of Power and the Meters, Shawn has established his own distinctive style. He loves to interject ghost, unaccented, notes while playing on his Gretsch to fill in the silence. With his remarkable aptitude to embrace syncopation, he positively shines as the drummer. Showmanship outlines his aura with the combination of his impish physiognomy and the revolution of his drum sticks.
Bassist Greg Rhoades is the ultimate refined gentleman. On stage or at practice, his effortless flair is divulged and infused once a bass is on hand. The persuasive chords that he fabricates are sheer brilliance and his ability to captivate an audience with his genuine disposition makes your hair stand up on end. Greg has played with a number of bands in the Austin and San Antonio area, ranging from fusion to jazz. The opportunities to expand his interest led him to join STARCHILD as the four string marvel and back up vocalist. Although influenced by a variety of talents, Greg gives credence to Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, Miles Davis, and the Funkadelics. Once a trombone player as a teenager, now a remarkable bassist as an adult, Greg stated humorously, “Now I’m monogamous” in regards to his ongoing adventure with a bass.
Recent activities include selling out legendary blues theater Antone''s in Austin, TX., performing live on radio shows across the country and headlining a Grammy Awards party in ABC studios celebrating American Indian Music. STARCHILD has also composed music for many fashion events and independent film scores.
Soulful lyrics accompanied by powerful arrangements and the spontaneous combustion of an energetic and improvisational performance is what the audience receives every time STARCHILD hits the stage.
