The story of: BLUE STATUE
BLUE STATUE is a project started in 1996 by Dion L. Williams, an artist who composes, performs, records and produces all of his own material.
Dion started writing poetry and lyrics in high school, though it''s the acoustic guitar where he finds most of the inspiration for his material. He is influenced by bands and artists such as The Cure, The Rolling Stones, R.E.M., The Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan and Bob Marley.
Originally the songwriter and vocalist for the band THE WONDERFIELD in the early 90''s, an alternate rock band from PIETERMARITZBURG, which was made up of: Dion (Vocals); his two younger brothers, Mark A. Williams (Bass) and Clinton Williams (Guitar); Ron Wartmann (Guitar); Jacques van den Bergh (drums); and later Steven J. (Guitar), and Roots Cele (Drums). Because of other commitments the band split and Dion went on to start his own solo project, BLUE STATUE. Shane Nel joined as guitarist, and Mark A. Williams on bass guitar. The position of drummer was filled by whoever was available at the time, e.g. Jacques, Roots or occasionally Rob Marais, who now graces the stage with THE HAIRY LEGGED LENTYL EATERS.
After many live performances in and around Kwazulu-Natal, BLUE STATUE recorded thirteen songs with Rob at SIGNATURE STUDIOS, and in October 1997 released a collection of acoustic songs, called “WASTED WORDS”. The title track from the album received airplay in December 1997 on East Coast Radio. The experience Dion gained while in the studio, and with new equipment supplied by R&B Music (Pietermaritzburg), motivated him to write some of his best material to date, including the songs: Screaming Son, Secrets, Truth About You and Vacuum Six.
The band lineup continued to change, putting an enormous strain on Dion and his management, and eventually the project BLUE STATUE went into hibernation. The next ten years Dion concentrated on his guitaring and composing and accumulated more than twenty, new, good songs which were performed with various other musicians and live rock outfits in Pietermaritzburg. Dion also always had the responsibility of organizing and controlling sound for thier live gigs. Mostly because they just couldn,t afford to hire someone to do the job but also because the equipment was starting to get too complicated for the average musician to understand. Good soundmen don,t come cheap and sound control is never easy when you are one of the musicians performing, but somehow Dion always enjoyed it more than anyone else around, and always managed to get the bands through the live sets and some really difficult situations, mostly because of terrible venues. Then after purchasing his first professional live recording rig and studio software, he started recording, engineering and producing all of his work that he had accumulated over the many years of performing live. And so, LANTERN STUDIO was started, a home based studio where Dion could record and produce anytime. Just what he needed to start cataloging and marketing his material. In early 2006 Blue Statue met local composer/producer FTSE100, who introduced Dion to the latest production and studio software. Blue Statue later did some collaborative work with FTSE100, on tracks like WORLD OF LOVE and HISTORY. In May 2008 BLUE STATUE started recording the album WORLD GONE SOLO and later managed to get the services of JASON FOX (with the help of FTSE100), to assist in mixing down the tracks on the album. Jason is the ex-vocalist/soundman from the band 2FLY.
More than ten years after recording “WASTED WORDS”, and with assistance from Arthur Key (NITERIDER PROMOTIONS) who has been instrumental in getting the Studios work exposed to local and international audiences. BLUE STATUE recorded thirteen of their best tracks at LANTERN STUDIOS, with a fresh new styling and groove, and the album,”WORLD GONE SOLO” was released localy on 01/07/2008. A psychedelic/ alternate/ rock groove album, recorded and produced by DION. This album includes his reggae single called “RASTA CHANT”, dedicated to the memory of LUCKY DUBE. This album also includes a guest appearance by guitar guru LANK MALENKY. Main acoustic and electric bass lines are composed and performed by Mark A. Williams and mouthorgan, keyboards, percussion, textural lead guitars and vocal harmonies are performed by Dion.
They have experimented with and applied new production techniques which have inspired and produced a new level of creativity from them as composers/producers. They are taking full advantage of the digital age of drum and instrument samples to decorate and drive the acoustic framework and alternate vocals. These tools have given BLUE STATUE’s electro/acoustic rock new direction, providing more variety, depth and consistency. Jason Fox has also agreed to keep working with Blue Statue as the Sound Engineer for Blue Statue’s future live performances.
Dion, Mark and Jason’s composing, recording, mixing and producing together has resulted in them starting their own production label, now known as BLUEFOX PRODUCTIONS. An independent label that stands up for local talent, starting with Blue Statue.
Now another album is about to be released internationally, called INTROPOLOGY part1, and will be released on thier BLUEFOX LABLE. It is an interesting choice of ten powerful electro dance/rock songs. A real good quality local production planned to be released, officially, on 01/12/2008. Don’t miss out!
News is that BLUE STATUE are also still working on an acoustic/unplugged album at LANTERN STUDIO, called SIX STRINGS IN THE MIDDLE, to be released early 2009, and word is, it’s gonna be hot! It will feature a couple of acoustic versions of a few of the popular WORLD GONE SOLO tracks like PERFECT and SCREAMING SON.
