beautiful addiction: an overview
(artist: steve roth)

What it is:

Beautiful Addiction is 13 tracks, (eleven songs plus two "live in the studio" acoustic cuts), of original music by Steve Roth, an independent singer-songwriter from Buffalo, New York. The project was co-produced with award-winning producer and engineer, Armand John Petri, whose recording and production credits include The Goo Goo Dolls, 10,000 Maniacs, and Sixpence None the Richer. The CD was recently released in 2004.

What it''s like:

"I call it ''neo-bohemian''," says Roth. The disc is acoustic guitar driven rock, reminiscent of the early 70''s with elements of the 90''s Seattle coffeehouse scene, and the edgy sophistication of 21st century writing and production. Overall, it can be described as an organic mix of modern rock/acoustic pop.

"What It''s Like" opens up with early Rolling Stones style percussion and Tom Petty-like electric slide guitar. The title track features industrial bass lines, a haunting and distorted violin solo, and CSN-esque harmonies.

The project also showcases a delicate, finger-style, singer-songwriter presence. "Cry an Ocean" creates a texture akin to Clapton''s Tears in Heaven; "Tattoo" is a minimalist nod to the exotic and hypnotic, a la Sting; and "Wish I Could Be With You" shares the big, empty spaces of Dave Matthews'' Some Devil.

The flavorings of alt-country can be heard in "Telegraph Road" and "Save Me."

Yet, Beautiful Addiction is not a collection of different styles. There''s a common thread of acoustic guitar, organic percussion, and vocal that weave through all the songs, making them a cohesive unit that fit together like the pieces of a simple puzzle.

Song structure and percussion have drawn comparisons to the I Am Sam soundtrack, as well as acoustic cuts by the Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows, Indigo Girls, Seventy-Sevens and Michael Knott.

What it''s about:

"The songs look at love, life, and faith in some state of crisis or uncertainty. Or euphoria," explains Roth. "There''s tension but, it''s a beautiful tension; like a weird attraction to the sacred and the profane, all at the same time and somehow it makes sense."

The album is an examination and celebration of life''s highs, lows, mysteries and incongruities. Think along the lines of U2, Johnny Cash and Dashboard Confessional.

It''s moody and melancholy but not without hope. It''s metaphorical, poetic and intensely personal. It''s something we all feel, relate to and live with.
