Details:
If you should see Portland musician Jamie Stillway in an airport, guitar in hand, don''t risk her ire by asking if she''s a singer-songwriter. Stillway is soft-spoken and genteel but a certain edge creeps into her tone when she assesses the stereotype.
"Well, that ain''t me!"
She wants her music to speak to the listener on another level. "There''s a story behind every single one of my songs. I''d like to think that people have a sense of those stories when they hear my music."
Stillway''s debut solo release, titled "Mell Of A Hess", presents a dozen of her wide-traveling songs. From Django-esque gypsy jazz progressions to ragtime with a modern twist, her music spans out into old-time roots, tango, and even nouveau classical modes. It''s like Julian Bream having lunch with Jerry Garcia in some ways, or the Gypsy Kings jamming with Blind Blake; an rootsy, satisfying mix of classically-fueled arpeggios and lush chords. These songs constitute a wringing out of Stillway''s rollercoaster of influences; her wild ride thus far through the eddies and pools of guitar pedagogy is evident in the myriad of nods to ragtime, classical guitar, and the Django revolution. "It''s in my nature, this general curiousity about all types of music and the desire to play them all, at least a little bit," she says.
Stillway has already made her mark with resonator slide man Ben Bonham, snaring serious accolades from all corners. As music critic Don Campbell of the Oregonian aptly reports, "Jamie Stillway not only comps big, fat, swinging and expensive jazz chords but picks with a ferocity that would make Django proud. If she''s not grinning ear to ear during her solos, she should be. Her technique is commanding and artful, and she possesses a gypsy soul that would be at home in 1930s Paris, or busking on the streets of Dallas".
Just the type to get her pals in on the act, Stillway''s new record features several hotshot locals including string bassist Tim Renner, mandolinists Caleb Klauder (Foghorn String Band) and David Tiller (Taarka, Thamusemeant), guitarist Mary Flower, bluegrass bassman Jesse Withers (Jackstraw), drummer Sean Moultrie and the haunting violin of Enion Pelta (Taarka, Thamusemeant).
"The idea for this record has been in my head for years, but it took awhile to find the right combination of personalities to make it work. Everyone who plays on it is a good friend of mine, and I think that made a big difference. I knew I had to try and capture my experience of playing with these great musicians."
