Details:
The idea for TURTLEBOY first came to Jonathan Lindhorst and Ryan Butler while visiting New York in the Fall of 2006 to see the Paul Motian Trio at the Village Vandguard. During that week they both got to discuss some musical concepts with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano, and were fascinated by the idea of a “bassless” trio, and how relatively unexplored that musical setting was. Fast forward nearly a year later at a random coffee shop gig during the Montreal Jazz Festival, when they finally got an opportunity to try this concept out with drummer Adam Miller. Everyone could tell there was an immediate connection, and the three musicians threw themselves into the project. Since then, Turtleboy has gone on to perform at such prestigious venues as the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton, the Beatniq in Calgary and the Off Festival Du Jazz in Montreal. They have also completed a 6 week residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts and a tour of the Maritimes promoting the release of their debut album. TURTLEBOY blends concepts from Free-Jazz and other parts of the jazz tradition with aspects of Indie-Rock and Grunge, creating what they feel is a unique experience. More often than not, the emphasis is placed more on a group sound and collective improvisation, rather than any one person’s solo, and the band has worked tirelessly to create a seamless blend of total music.
