Chaos and Beauty was written and conceived between March and August 2008, in a dingy little room in a huge green house on Willard Street in Reseda Ca. To say this was a dark period of my life would be a grave understatement. This CD deals with Loss, "Recovery", and ultimately Redemption. I went through a spiritual reawakening and it is my belief that these songs were a big part of the process. They certainly were a more constructive and healthier way of dealing with my anger, and sorrow then the way I had been going about it. I demoed the songs, and two things became clear, one ...that the songs worked conceptually well together, and two... I needed professional musicians and a very good engineer to get my ideas across.
I asked Doug Johnson to play drums. I played with him in Logan05 and thought he was the best drummer I''d ever worked with. He bought in Stan Taylor to play bass. We rehearsed in Oxnard Ca . Doug Gave me Earle Mankey''s number. I was impressed that he had played with Sparks and also was considered a legendary producer, having worked with The Beach Boys, Concrete Blonde, The Runaway''s and many other artists who I enjoyed. Earle''s production ideas were very unique and he encouraged a good many of my unorthodox ideas . He was very enthusiastic ,and brought an energy to the recordings that was invaluable. We began recording in October ''08 and finished in Dec. We recorded 6 songs , Brand New Oblivion , Beautiful and Damned, Concubine, No Great Leap of Faith, I Won''t Go Out Like This, and You Know What I Mean.
Originally I intended to balance out the somewhat depressing subject matter with some more up beat songs of redemption , but waiting on those would delay the CD''s release signifigantly. I am accustomed to writing out of sadness and anger . Instead I''ve chosen to round out the CD with a series of ambient songs that I feel represent the serenity I feel as a result of this journey. The title Chaos and Beauty could be taken to mean a couple different things. We can create Beautiful art from Chaotic events. The saddest truth can also be beautiful. Lyrically I wasn''t always trying to be nice , I did however try to balance this sometimes brutal honesty with lovely melodies and arrangements , I stress the word try. I believe the chaos of my life lead to a new and better way of living where I can understand the Beauty that is all around us. Of course the songs can be interpreted a number of different ways. It is my sincere hope that it reaches listeners who may be experiencing things I''ve dealt with and that perhaps it will mean something to them. That would mean more to me then any commercial or critical success.
