MP3 stereo crush - like a girlfriend

there''s a bit of radiohead''s glorious despondency, the cure''s brooding buoyancy and the occasional u2 "big moment."

5 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Modern Rock, ROCK: 80''s Rock

Details:
mention the phrase "modern rock" around some folks and they get seriously skittish, like a kid confronted with a heaping mound of brussel sprouts. what does modern mean? which modern are you talking about? right now, modern? ''80s modern? post-modern? post-rock? "post toasties?"

now get your earflaps ready for the inevitable tirade that''s bound to follow about how modern rock sucks, that it''s superficial and hasn''t got the guts and the soul that we used to have back in the day - blah blah blah.

save it for the chat room, grandpa. put away the incense. rock has more to offer than jingle-jangling 12-string guitars, tea in the garden and lou reed''s sunglasses. there have been some new developments while you were at the head shop looking at black light posters. and yet despite technology''s march, the ebb and flow of romance, regret and worrying about the government remains the cornerstone of the whole business. behold stereo crush, for example.

this intrepid portland quartet has a system that''s bulletproof. it''s practical, rhythmically responsible and just plain sounds great.

gelling around the words and voice of guitarist johnny crash, stereo crush proves capable of not only nimbly scaling the walls of sound, but cutting a few nifty steps once it''s up there. balance and equilibrium are never in question; crash may be suffering through a case of the melancholies or seizing up in full-bloom bliss or perhaps merely pensive over the state of things (what''s eating you, johnny?), but the chemistry never tips.

peter swenson keeps his beats tidy and timely. keyboardist (key maestro? key master? keymaster of gosar?) erik stanfill tends to be supportive and invisible, but when his cue comes up, has no problem with elegance - or chaos, for that matter. benjamin rickard has funky dreams ("call me bootsy"), but that would be indulgent. restraint and good taste are the laws of the land. remarkably, everyone knows when to flow and when to hold still, like a really fine haircut. wind? rain? stocking cap? never a strand out of place.

enough balloon juice! what the heck do they sound like, gabby? where are the adjectives? where''s my pull quote?

time for the taste test: when stereo crush gets cued up over at rock house, even the cantankerous old geezers take note. there''s a bit of radiohead''s glorious despondency, the cure''s brooding buoyancy and the occasional u2 "big moment." someone mentions bryan ferry and roxy music, but he''s not sure why. something about the power and dignity of unrequited love.

we all agree on one crucial factor: even within the limited horizonal constraints of a pop song, stereo crush never settle for ordinary or "close enough for rock ''n'' roll." stereo crush hits what its aiming at. there''s always a lot going on, all over the place. and it never stops reaching and never stops building.

but where''s the vital demographic breakdown? does this music appeal to young americans of slightly above-average intellect with gobs of disposal income? is it radio-friendly? is it, in fact, modern rock?

sure it is, for lack of a better pithy programming description. modern like a fox, baby.
