Hillside Records has just released a very interesting new CD by Curtis Potter. In this new album of 12 tunes by this class entertainer we find a mix of brand new recordings and classic gems from the 1980s. Very interestingly enough, one of the new tunes I Need Help can also be seen as a video when the CD is played on your computer. You can watch and enjoy Curtis and these awesome musicians right there on the session.
The new cuts on the album feature the great Gary Carpenter playing his steel guitar, Justin Trevino doing acoustic guitar and the fiddles of Dale Morris Jr. and Reggie Rueffer. The rhythm section consists of drummer Jim Loessberg, bassist Jake Hooker and former Asleep at the Wheel member, Tim Alexander, playing piano. Amber Digby is the background vocalist and both Justin and Jake join Curtis vocally to make a trio on the album title tune, Buddy Mize''s When the Neon Lights Come On. The musicians on the earlier cuts include pedal steel legends, Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons, JayDee Maness and Weldon Myrick. Steve Chapman, Dave Kirby and Ray Edenton play acoustic guitar and Reggie Young, Jimmy Capps and Billy Sanford play electric guitar. Also on the classic cuts are the fiddles of Johnny Gimble and Buddy Spicher as well as piano greats, Pig Robbins and David Briggs. The rhythm section includes Leon Rhodes and Harold Bradley playing tic-tac bass with the drums of recently deceased Buddy Harman. Bob Moore played bass.
A beautiful Ray Pennington composition included is Nothing Can Stand in My Way. Of course there are loads of Texas dance hall sounds like Buddy Mize and Dallas Frazier''s Just a Foolish Notion and Buddy''s solo composition I Wish You''d Stayed Around. Ray Sanders gave us When She Turns You On, She Wears Faded Jeans and I Can''t Make it Without You. A real gem is fiddle legend Joe Red Hayes'' Story Behind the Photograph. Then there are the real swing sounds of I Believe in You, Ray Price and Rusty Gabbard''s I''ll Be There and Texas Proud from the pen of the late Ray Buzzeo.
