Details:
The Montana-based heavy rock band Sunder, was first formed by Derek Mascorella and Tod Williams in 1998. Mascorella, a guitarist, and Williams, a writer studying under the notorious western writer "Wild" Bill Kittredge, formed a friendship under the shared understanding of the difficulty of growing up in Montana. They both agreed that little in pop culture described a life as close to the edge as life in Montana, a state that is still officially classified as frontier territory. The experience of living in Montana is difficult and bleak, with nothing to look forward to, and little hope of escape. Each town is like the worst inner-city neighborhood, complete with rampant drug and alcohol abuse, ruined families, white gangs, wide-spread poverty and suicide, set under the extreme landscape of high plains desert and brutal mountain ranges, miles from any neighbors, the law, or a decent wage. With this understanding the two decided to ignore all the influences of Mtv and pop culture to create a band that embodied all of Montana, reflecting what they had gone through living in the rural West. Like Montana, they wrote desperate songs filled with aggression, raw beauty, and truth. The band also adopted the notorious Montana vigilante number, 3-7-77, as a symbol of their lawless attitude towards the status quo. Williams and Mascorella were joined in 1999 by Sewrey, Ranta and Zimmer, who all shared that same philosophy, completing Sunder''s rugged, furious line-up:

DEREK MASCORELLA - guitar/vocal
MATT RANTA - guitar
ANDY SEWREY - bass
BRANDON ZIMMER - drums/vocal
TOD WILLIAMS - words/artwork

Since then, Sunder have played many shows across Montana and the West, converting fans with their all-or-nothing live shows, their basic philosophy and dead-pan honesty. Their song Long Dead Forever has charted on the top requested songs on Western Montana''s Clear Channel radio station, KBAZ, the Blaze. Sunder is unique in that it still has one member who plays no instruments and does not sing. Williams, a shadowy figure who will not be photographed, calls upon Montana history and mythology to inspire and guide the group as they build themselves into an accomplished rock act. Sunder''s lyrics are a mix of violent images of the prairie and dark loneliness of the Rocky Mountains. In a state riddled with poverty, right-wing militia extremists and farm house meth labs, they write songs that are both an graphic depiction of this hard life and an escape from it. With a mix of metal, punk and heavy rock, Sunder pound out songs with the rage and introspection of a small town existence. Honesty, strength and anger from the sons of the working class, Sunder throw down an intense live show that is as tough as they come Sunder is the new American West.......
