David Crow is from Kent, WA. He studied saxophone with Jordon Ruwe, Greg Yasinitsky, and Dave Hagelganz. “I grew up listening to bebop music, and that is where my fundamental concepts come from. Then I started listening to every other kind of jazz. It’s nice not to have a strict form. I like to take what I have learned from all the different styles of jazz and put it in at any given moment, depending on how I feel.”

David Miner is from Tacoma, WA. “My influences are too many to list. I listen to anything and everything I can. Musical style has become cliché and regurgitated, and I attempt to tackle music’s elements as aspects in and of themselves (as apposed to completely integral to each other): harmony, melody, and rhythm. freejazzT’s concept of time and rhythm tend towards elasticity where no groove is set up, but where time is more felt, though we absolutely have tunes that are nearly traditional. Harmony is both very complex and very simple and is both about the progression from one change to the next and each individual vertical moment. Melody is integral to harmony, though if taken completely out of the harmonic context, one can be truly free from the entanglement of the musical elements.”

Al Cantey is from California, and now resides in Washington. “My musical tastes are primarily motivated by a band’s rhythm section. A group of people that can collectively understand the intended rhythmic feel of a tune really inspires me. The genre of music really doesn’t matter. It’s the deep understanding of groove or soul for lack of a better term that really gives me the chills. Classical cats can do it, roots cats can do it, metal cats can do it, but it’s the jazz cats that do it the way I like best. Everyone in most jazz groups can really put it down rhythmically. I guess that comes from the stripped down sound of jazz. It’s usually 3 or 4 cats lockin’ in on primarily acoustic instruments, no distortion or effects to hide behind, just raw groove. It’s the bands groove that makes them great, to me at least, not how cool they look or what kind of gear they play.”
