Debbie’s Music:
Debbie’s music combines her influences from early R&B, Pop and Rock to form a unique blend of her own. Each song brings out her smooth, expressive vocals under-pinned by a pivotal acoustic guitar with a common lyrical theme of making the most out of the life (the gift) that we’ve been given. Sometimes described as “acousti-funk rock”, the music is most often described as a “much-needed change.” Debbie’s voice has been referred to as sweet and soulful as with the enchanting melodies of several selections, yet she has other tunes that highlight driving guitar playing and passionate vocals.
Discography:
Debbie self produced her first acoustic, solo album, Heart Thoughts, in 1993 with a collection of love songs – but considers her true debut album to be This I Know Is So released in 1995. With full instrumentation covering a bluesy horn section in the first song to the screaming Telecaster in the last song, this CD dangles on the edges of jazz, blues and rock with an acoustic thread hidden beneath every song, tying them together. The album covers topics such as relationships and happiness, but also reveals Debbie’s belief in persistence and having a positive attitude about life. The title cut states that “time is just an illusion”, and Debbie follows up on this theme in her latest release entitled Back Around. From the funky groove of the wurlitzer in the first song to the wah-pedal in the second, from the haunting background vocals of the third to the smooth, silky rhythm of the title cut, the listener is motivated to live in the present moment, believe in themselves, and adhere to the energy of the universe – after all, it all comes Back Around.
During the early 90’s Debbie performed solo and with a collection of different musicians forming her band in many venues and festivals in the North Carolina area. After the release of This I Know Is So, in the mid 90’s, Debbie and her band hit the road for a two-year East Coast tour covering clubs and festivals from Georgia to NY with as many as 4 shows per week. The CD received airplay on college and commercial radio stations across several states. After returning to the studio in the late 90’s, Debbie was forced to take time off for medical reasons and was not able to perform again until 2002. In 2005, Debbie put together a Benefit Concert for Breast Cancer Research benefitting the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center. 2009 plans to be a big year for Debbie as she prepares for the release of Back Around with a focus entirely on a Benefit Concert Series.
Personal Background:
“I’ve lived in North Carolina my whole life. My parents were older when I was born and my brother and sister were 13 and 15 years older, so I grew up pretty much an only child. I was a very, very shy kid and my parents (jokingly) worried about me as my main hobbies were reading the encyclopedia and building Astronomy Labs in my closets.
I came out of my shell a little when I started playing soccer at the age of 8, but it wasn’t until my parents bought me a $25 guitar from the flea market when I was 10 that I really came into my own. It wasn’t as much about the playing as it was about the writing and the ability to express myself that the guitar provided. I wrote my first song that year as a present to my mom. And at the age of 10, I had discovered what music would become for me: a gift that I could give away. I began writing songs to and for other people and music provided an avenue that allowed me to expose myself in ways that were previously impossible.
I’m still an introvert today and I know this because it’s fairly exhausting for me to be in group settings whereas extroverts tend to gain energy in a crowd; however, put a guitar in my hands, or give me a microphone, a stage, and a large audience, and it’s like I don’t have a shy bone in my body.
Today, my objective is to write and perform in order to support charities and various non-profit organizations. Music has always been cathartic for me and I hope to feed the needs of my local community via benefit concerts as well as promote the message of my music internationally with as much global exposure as possible.”
Debbie’s Philosophy:
“There’s music within everyone. We may not all know it as music, but it’s that part of us that has the ability to feel, relate, and connect. It brings life to our physical forms and nourishment to the soul. Music is fluid and dynamic and without it we become stagnant. Music brings healing, escape, companionship and even laughter. It makes us feel alive. Better yet – it makes us feel. This is what my music is about. If it doesn’t make you feel something, then I haven’t done my job. I know that what we do does affect others. Good or bad, it will have an impact. I know that I’m supposed to create music that will have in impact upon others – whether it makes you smile, laugh, or feel nostalgic. And I’m going to do my best not to let the music die within me.”
Musical Influences:
“My main escape growing up was going to my room and turning the stereo up as loud as possible, sitting on the chair and rocking back and forth. My family called it “booping”. (I still do it today as I’m driving down the road and get plenty of funny looks). I used to listen to 70’s galore. Anything with a funky beat made me happy. I also couldn’t get enough of early Motown. Then the 80’s rock came in and I really enjoyed the likes of Pat Benatar, Heart and Foreigner.”
