The first thing I noticed when I saw "Terb" live was that they played without a drummer. I got a bit held back as I think real drums are very important for a good live sound. Still I prepared myself to hear them. They delivered 10 songs in a rather professional manner although the show lacked some stamina. But what made a real impression on me was the quality and intelligence of the songs and lyrics. There were real rock songs that made me want to jump and gave me the shills and there were some more introspective songs played with an amazing vibe and a naive felling. The Talking Heads came to mind ("Talking who?" said Roy) has well as dEUS, Tindersticks and some bits of The Pixies and some smaller bits of Joy Division.
I went to talk to them at the end and bought a CD. According to them they lacked some stage experience because they decided to record the album first and just them played it live. They said it suited their style better this way. As Roy, one of the songwriter members puts it:
"If after you record an album you decide you don''t like it, well just finish the band and go for another thing before spending time trying to make it happen on stage." Immediately Alex, the other songwriter member, remarked:
"But after recording the album we decided we liked it! It wasn''t exactly how we wanted it, it wasn''t exactly as polish has we would like it to be, but hey people say one of the reasons they like terb is precisely because it sounds a bit unpolished, so why argue with them?".
I couldn''t agree more and the last time I talked to them they were rehearsing with a drum player although that doesn''t mean they''ll play with one. According to Edgar the third member of the band:
" That we will record the next album with real drums it''s settled, but a live drummer? We haven''t decided yet. With terb we record first and them play it live. But now playing live doesn''t scary us anymore!"
That I really like Terb it''s easy to see. I like the songs and I like the style. And I can''t wait to hear them live again. But please, get a Real Drummer!
