Released in 2009, Hi-Fi Digimonster is the first official Mobile Glitch Factory album, after 2007''s Bitcrunch Swirl was credited simply to ''MGF'', which represented an evolutionary chimera comprised of elements of a previous incarnartion, Morning Gold Fix, and the new entity; Mobile Glitch Factory. The differences between Morning Gold Fix (the Fix) and Mobile Glitch Factory (the Factory) may seem subtle to the uninitiated, but drastic to those familiar with Morning Gold Fix''s output in the late 90s and early 00s. The Factory builds on the Fix''s solid foundation of post-electro groove manipulation with an additional focus on circuit-bending, chiptune methodology, realtime mixing, turntablism, and sound tweaking. While the Fix is multi-tracked and mixed entirely in the computer, the Factory is sequenced ''outside the box'' in real-time as a simulation of a live performance in the studio, which is recorded to 2-track stereo for additional editing. This method facilitates the occasional generation of spontaneous events (sometimes, but not always ''glitches'') which can be exploited musically with creative post-editing. The Factory''s ''mobile'' component is a cut-down battery and solar-powered performance rig centered around a Palm Vx PDA with MIDI expansion sled attached and circuit-bent Yamaha ''walkstations''.
Named after one of Canada''s most notorious exports, Hi-Fi Digimonster blends contemporary and anachronistic electronic music techniques with minimal turntablism to create a unique sound that is at the same time both familiar and fresh. With micro-genre restraints ignored, under less-capable hands this album could end up pleasing fewer people than it aims to. But in this case, Hi-Fi Digimonster should appeal to anyone with a taste for high-quality instrumental electronic workouts, distilled from the best elements of various fads in the electronic music scene over the past two decades.
