Musician and producer Brent Rogers releases an album that was self produced and recorded on Roland VS-880 in a southeast Portland basement during the winter of 1998-99 as Brent first entered the Portland music scene. The recordings are an eclectic mix of rock, country and love songs that showcase Brent as a singer and songwriter.
Some of the songs on this record were written in fire station #37 in Dallas, Texas between 1995 and 1998, where Brent and his firefighter and medic partner Dave McFarland would work endlessly on the structure and melody of the tunes when between emergency calls. Brent recalls, "We''d be in uniform at the back of the apparatus room... that''s the fancy name for the garage where the engines and trucks were parked, working out a melody or chord structure on "Sittin'' In Denny''s" and we''d catch a call on the MICU (Mobile Intensive Care Unit, a.k.a. ambulance...) and have to put down our guitars to head out of the station with lights and sirens. Usually we''d keep working on the song in the cab on the way to the heart attack, shooting or other event. It was a real hoot combining my two favorite things to do... play music and answer 911 emergencies!"
Brent''s songs are melodically catchy and have unique chord structuring that keep the listener''s attention by the way they introduce major and minor key shifts and a variety of rhythmic patterns while still remaining AAA radio friendly.
On this record Brent connects with his southern heritage in the collaborative effort "Love''s Got A Hold On Me," written with lyricist Karen Kantor. Brent recounts, "Love''s Hold was the first song where I purposefully recorded pedal steel. When I was younger I never understood the subtle beauty of the instrument when played by a pro like Portland pedal expert musician Paul Brainard." Brent ended up selling the song to a Nashville/Branson singer Tim Hadler. Tim hasn''t made a national hit of it yet, but Brent points out how nice it is to get checks in the mail from time to time as a published songwriter.

Brent K. Rogers is a treasure of a singer-songwriter who hails from the Northwest. Known among musicians as a "master recording engineer", his ability to perform magic with their songs has made him much-sought-after for CD projects. Rogers currently has his own CD out that clearly demonstrates just how talented he really is. Titled "A Love To Call My Own," it is what he calls an eight-song collection of works in progress. It is a fabulous collection of original tunes that showcases him and his music.
"Sittin'' in Denny''s..." (written by Karen Kantor and Rogers, and arranged by David MacFarland) features rich vocals and guitar work. It''s one of the best on this CD that is filled with a lot of great tunes. "All I Should Have Said" is another noteworthy tune. The song has a brilliant violin featured along with vocals possessing a richness that is becoming a trademark for Rogers. The haunting Country song, "Love Got a Hold On Me" (written by Rogers and Kantor), is another standout on the CD. The featured steel guitar adds a unique dimension to the tune that should become a favorite to anyone fortunate enough to have this eight-song recording project in their record collection.
"Therapy in A Minor" (written by Rogers and MacFarland) has some great guitar work that occasionally reminds you of some of the great "licks" that emerges from "Hotel California" performed by The Eagles. "The Preacher''s Daughter" (written by Linda Petty and Rogers), features some outstanding vocals. "The Air That I Breathe", made popular by "The Hollies" in the 1970¹s is brilliant as performed by Rogers.
The title track "A Love To Call My Own" (written by Kirsten Vanderwall, David Dickinson, and Rogers) is probably the best song on the CD. The vocals and music makes Rogers shine and best represents the wealth of his talent that is yet untapped. "Back Again" (written by Rogers), however, is also clearly a contender for best song on this CD and may be just that. Fast-paced, it shows that Rogers can pick up the tempo and not lose his creativity and special qualities that are a constant companion in his slower-paced tunes.
"A Love To Call My Own", is a brilliant eight-song collection of works.
