THE LIMES -- LIMETIME
Jeff Sparks and Assia Mortensen, aka The Limes, draw inspiration from a variety of sources: Foreign cinema (Almodovar Film,) 70’s porn music (In You, Strolling,) and sunny 60’s style pop (Feel Right, Satellite Samba.)
Limetime, The Limes’ first full-length album, introduces listeners to a ‘New Lounge’ genre of pop. Mortensen supplied the bulk of the lyrics while Sparks saw to the musical arrangements, in a writing partnership reminiscent of Exene Cervenka and John Doe from the L.A. band X.
Musically, the Limes have been compared to early Pizzicato Five, Nico, Wings (who’s song “Blackbird” receives a cover treatment,) and Joao and Astrud Gilberto. The album’s instrumental tracks vary in length and mood, providing a kind of cohesion to what would otherwise be a wildly eclectic collection of songs.
The result is a party record, a lovers'' record, a headphones record—-virtually anytime is the right time for Limetime.
