Review: The Fabulous Capo Regime''s Let It Ride CD

The Vegas-based Capo Regime, is truly fabulous, as the sign says.

Everything about each performance says "Vegas" through and through, as in the local hit favorite "What Happens Here Stays Here," now enjoying modest local radio airplay.

The latest CD "Let it Ride" has just been released for market, here first, and is still in limited supply as only 1000 initial discs have been pressed. (Hint: Order Now!) This initial batch is certain to become a collector''s item in the year of the Las Vegas Centennial Celebration.

The title theme (Las Vegas Theme) is rumored to have been the inspiration for what has become the world''s most recognizable -- and uttered -- ad catchphrase, "What Happens Here, Stays Here. Las Vegas." Personalities from Jay Leno to Laura Bush have used the phrase with audiences to great effect.

This branding effort received Brandweek Magazine''s award for Best Brand of 2004.

The album covers a diverse body of work, exhibiting and showcasing the multi-faceted repertoire of the band: From the patriotic heart-string tugger "America," to the dark strains of "Our Father," and the whimsical ballad "Man in the Moon," Let It Ride is one of the finest debut albums we''ve heard.

Track 10, The Dance Version of the Las Vegas Theme, will make you want to dance the night away, if Track 9 "I Can''t Sleep" applies.

The Band is comprised of a group of seven:

Tony Sgro, Musical Director, guitar, keyboards, vocals
Jami McGill and sister Tracy McLaughlin, vocals
Justin Dee Haggai, keyboards
Charlie Owen, guitar
Steve Tolson, drums
Elijah Love, bass

Jami McGill''s sassy wide-ranging vocals carry the tune while the band provides a precision back-beat reminiscent after a fashion, of Bill Black''s combo, whose metronome-like precision and clean sound were hallmarks of another era. Jami''s sister Tracy -- originally trained as a classical opera singer -- provides background vocals and high-note harmony. Interestingly, both Tracy and Jami sang back up for megastars Paul Anka and Barry Manilow.

Musical Director Tony Sgro is an incredibly talented, ambidextrous virtuoso, writing, singing, and playing a range of instruments. He pulled together the CD as well as the entire band, now together for nearly three years, and cowrote just about every song on the CD.

Steve Tolson, drummer, has had a career of 40 years, jamming with the likes of Chuck Barry and other legendary figures in the business.

Elijah Love, bass player, has enjoyed a wide, varied musical career. He has performed in many different bands and has transitioned from guitar to now, the bass.

Charlie Owen, guitar, is a talented vocalist and multi-faceted entrepreneur as well.

Keyboardist Justin Dee Haggai, a native of Israel - or ''refugee from an exploding coffee shop,'' as noted in the band''s bio, is an incredibly gifted pianist and synth master, whose rippling, melodic riffs seem bigger than life, particularly in the piano solo on "What Happens Here" (Las Vegas Theme on the CD).

In addition to the usual covers - which the group does in exquisite fashion, the band performs its own material, some of which is included on this debut album.

Unlike most local bands, all members have all had highly successful musical careers prior to joining the band, and it shows.

The band will be playing at the Fremont Street Experience during the week before and during the Las Vegas Centennial Celebration, in May, 2005. See the band''s website for the latest updates on performances and venues - https://www.tradebit.com
