Tarek Kanaan is a singer/songwriter who hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Tarek has been making music since he was 7 years old when he learned to play the piano by ear and began to write melodies at age 8. Tarek played multiple musical instruments throughout his childhood including coronet, French horn, guitar, bass, drums, and piano. He co-formed a band in his mid-teens with his 2 younger brothers and friends and was the primary creative songwriting force and keyboardist for this project. At this time he was also writing classical style piano pieces and orchestral arrangements. At age 18, Tarek was accepted into the School of Music at the University of Michigan for composition, but decided to pursue a degree in Engineering instead. His band, NeoVogue, played all original 80s style pop music and gigged at local schools, clubs and bars for a period of 4 years while Tarek was in college. This culminated in NeoVogue getting signed to a small record deal and recording a song in a premier Detroit recording studio. Unfortunately the band broke up soon after and Tarek continued to make music for a number of years on his own, before leaving music all together for approx. 8 years. After this musical drought, Tarek rediscovered his passion for music in his early 30s primarily through acoustic guitar and playing folk music with friends. During the winter of 2003, Tarek was inspired musically again, and began writing new songs with a vengeance. Thus began the singer/songwriter phase of Tarek''s life. He began writing, recording, mixing, and producing music again, including lyrics, and from Feb, 2003 through Feb 2004 he wrote and recorded his debut solo CD, Hollow. A second album has already been written, but not recorded, and a third is in the works. Tarek''s music is an essential expression of who he is, an integral part of his personality, and a gift he wants to share with the world. He is committed to having music as a focus in his life for the rest of his life. Some of Tarek''s musical influences are Elliott Smith (RIP), George Harrison (RIP), The Beatles, Aimee Mann, Ron Sexsmith, Radiohead, and many, many more. Tarek is currently working as an Engineer for Ford Motor Company, and plans to go back to school next year to pursue a Masters in Social Work and work as a Therapist while still pursuing his musical aspirations. Tarek currently lives in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in a big 154 year old house in a historic district with his 5 year old daughter, girlfriend, cat, 4 fish, plants, oh, and ghosts.
