Details:
"In this, the debut album from the Easton area trio, you get that rare amalgamation of three seasoned, accomplished musicians of vision with impeccable resumes, applying their powers in a common direction to make refreshingly original, substantial music. Self-characterized as a jazz/soul/pop combo, they are comprised of Doug Hawk on vocals, Dan DeChellis on piano/keyboards, and Rian Carr on drums. DeChellis''s compositions cannily blend velvety rich, often minimalist jazz progressions with powerful, rhythmic chord work to yield a variety in the band''s pallet from contemplative to jumping, rocking grooves, often in the same song. Carr''s drums are nuanced and complex, but he''s bodacious and confident enough to punch when the material calls for straight time. Hawk is a revelation. Working with a muscular tenor that reminds one of a Mick Hucknell or a Paul Rogers with three times the training, he has a gift for improvisation and phrasing, with his scats often propelling the groove like a shot of nitro. By no stretch of the imagination is this popular music in the frequency of the heaviest current video rotation, but there is something here for everyone: For the musician, an object lesson in skill and inspiration for getting out of the "three-chord-riff, minor bridge, rousing chorus, [rinse and repeat] rut," for the music lover, enough jazz that you don''t have to wonder about what you''re supposed to appreciate, enough soul that you know these guys aren''t posers, and enough pop so you know these guys aren''t deliberately playing over you. Although it would result in a loss of intimacy in the two-instrument approach, one shudders to think what the road band of these guys would sound like with an iconoclastic bassist and a soprano sax weaved into the mix. A rare, different gem of a find." Pa Musician
