As a follow up to their debut “Dive In”, Chocolate Seastorm releases a two albums at once with a set of covers and rarities in “Swim” and “Float”. If you’ve ever heard them live, you’ve heard most of this before. Continuing with their retro-infused brand of pop and rock, Chocolate Seastorm mines a reserve of recordings to bring a fresh take on songs we’re familiar with and some we’re not.

Swim starts off with the Zero 7 hit “Let Go” but this version is a bit more uptempo pop and rock with the pulsing 80’s beat and an underlying drum loop. The loops continue on the next track, the Madonna anthem, “Ray of Light” but with the softer sweeter edge of Alanna Vicente’s voice and Chocolate Goodness.

My favorite track has to be the Oasis classic “Wonderwall” that’s been covered every which way but never with trombones and a wink to Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4”. This shows the band taking a well know song and making it sound fun and unique.

Things get going with a few original songs starting with the punkish “Trippin’” that moves along with a distorted bass line and the lyric “some people walk with a slunch”. When’s the last time you said “slunch”? Moving on to the Latin Rock flavored tale of loneliness and love “Missing You” pushes the tempo to the next level including a “Lonely Bull” style trumpet line. Band member, producer and all around musician, Dave Merenda’s funky retro Bari sax treatment of “Waves” – a tale of surfing and decisiveness – switches things up with a dance tune worthy of any downtown club.

We move on to a live track, “Funky Nassau” culled from one of their first gigs in Los Angles. A loose but sincerely funky version of this early 70’s Bahamanian classic which is repeated at the end with a equally funky studio version.

“Swim” is capped off with another group of classic well-knows songs – Joe Jackson’s “It’s Different For Girls” takes on a new female POV with Alanna’s vocals. The Lemon Piper’s hit “Green Tambourine” is made modern and the 60’s classic “Fortune Teller” has an 80’s vibe.
