Portland-based singer/songwriter Chad Van Horn jumps into the independent music game with his 2008 debut “Deeper Down”. A multi-instrumentalist with a degree in music and an ear for melodic lines, Chad loves the arranging and production process almost more than he loves playing, and he does just about all of it on this album. “Having an education in music is both a blessing and a curse- I can create melodies and progressions knowing exactly how and why they fit together, but I can’t listen to music without my analytical ear kicking in and processing everything by numbers and relationships.” Rest assured that doesn’t stop him from listening to as much as he can fit into his day.
Growing up in a fairly musical family with guitars and a piano in the house, Chad was always surrounded by music. Taking piano lessons with Grandpa by day, and by night falling asleep to the sound of his mom finger-picking away on her nylon-string in the living room, like a live lullaby. In 5th grade he began a five-year affair with the trumpet and big band jazz tunes, and then at 15 began to flirt with the acoustic guitar that leaned against the side of the piano. It was an on/off relationship until about 18 when they got serious, and have been going steady ever since.
As a musician Chad draws from a wide variety of musical influences from classical, jazz, soul, rock, and everything in between, and suffers from being easily inspired. “Often times I’ll hear an album or see a concert and say ‘Wow, my music needs to sound like that’. And then hear something completely different and say the same thing. Then I finally come back around and realize, ‘people are going to like my music because it’s my music, not because I copied someone else’s.’”
As a songwriter Chad is always striving for a new and different way to say the same things that have been said since the dawn of songwriting, whether it’s musing about young love, life experience, or expressing his deep faith and gratitude to God. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes… well, he’ll let you be the judge of that. Stay tuned in for a lot more on the way from this fledgling artist, it’s only going to get better over time.
