Details:
As a follow up to their debut “Dive In”, Chocolate Seastorm releases a two albums at once with a set of covers and rarities in “Swim” and “Float”. If you’ve ever heard them live, you’ve heard most of this before. Continuing with their retro-infused brand of pop and rock, Chocolate Seastorm mines a reserve of recordings to bring a fresh take on songs we’re familiar with and some we’re not.

Float starts off with the mood setting “Feelin’ Good” made famous by Nina Simone but equally compelling here with Alanna Vicente’s bewitching voice and Dave Merenda’s silky guitar. The guitar continues on the next track, the Hendrix classic, “Little Wing” but with a sweet edge.

Chocolate Seastorm has no less than 3 samba tracks starting out the with Jorge Ben song, “Mais Que Nada”, then two Jobim songs “Girl From Ipanima” and “Corcorvado” with Miss Vicente singing in Portuguese no less. Inserted between these lovely latin songs is the only and only song sung by producer/band member Dave Merenda, the Harry Nilsson “Without Her”. Dave’s smooth vocals are set up by the artfully played trumpet line throughout.

Things take a turn with “Still Confused” a tale of woe and doubt then on to the dance floor with “Waves” a tale of surfing and decisiveness. We move on to an obscure cover of “The Truth” from Handsome Boy Modeling School. This time it’s a lovely bluesy tune that evokes a smoky back room. The same feeling comes over you through “Spooky” the loungey “It’s Not Over” and the Bacharach classic “Look Of Love”

The whole thing ends up on a sweet note with “Pure Imagination” made famous by the other iconic chocolate reference, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

“Float” is an excellent companion to the dual release of “Swim” with both of them showing the vast influences on this fun, quirky band.

Chocolate Seastorm may have slipped off the radar in the past few years but this collection of wonderfully fun and loose covers, originals, and live takes makes the wait worthwhile.

DAVE MERENDA: bg vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, organ, keyboards, trombone, whistling
