In the spring of 2007, Cull arose to bring the ethics of riot grrrl and anarchism to the Portland metal scene. Born from friendships and prior music projects, Melissa, Dylan and Jacqui joined forces and began writing. Once songs began to take form, Dylan enlisted his younger brother, Ansel - not only filling out Cull’s
sound, but also solidifying the close-knit family-like dynamic of the band.
Incorporating elements of doom & black metal, as well as crust and goth, Cull creates a bleak, yet optimistic backdrop for lyrics dealing with the (hopefully) imminent collapse of industrial capitalism.
Having discarded the macho posturing typically associated with metal, Cull strives to actively create community and space for women in heavy music.
