Life leads Lafourche songster in musical direction
By KYLE CARRIER

Raceland native Corey Perrillioux has experienced it all.

He''s been to a war zone - twice - serving in both Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He''s been to Italy and Germany and has performed in front of hundreds, maybe even thousands, of people at German beer festivals and has done critical research at NASA''s Stennis Space Center in Kiln, Miss., his workplace.

So when he decided to make a CD, it was a piece of cake. The stress many artists face while producing music was an easy day for the Central Lafourche graduate.

The 39-year-old Army veteran released his first CD, a five-song LP entitled "Your Little Secret," in December.

Perrillioux''s "Secret" relates to his life experiences, so far.

"After going through two wars, it made me look at life in a whole new way," he explained. "Once you''re in that type of situation, everything else pretty much pales in comparison. If there are emergencies or things are not going so well, I stay optimistic now more than I did before."

Perrillioux''s path to the recording studio has included a number of unexpected forks.

After joining the band in junior high and playing drums at Central Lafourche High, Perrillioux fell head-first in love with music. He started garage bands with friends who shared his affinity for music.

By graduation in 1986, Perrillioux exchanged his drumsticks for a weapon, opting to enlist in the U.S. Army. Before he knew it, he was stationed in Germany.

There, he and a group of Marines formed Young Country. They played the circuit, appearing at various German beer festivals and military officers'' clubs.

"That was pretty amazing," Perrillioux said of the gigs at the beer festivals. "It was certainly an experience I could never forget."

When duty called, Perrillioux''s role with Young Country was put on hold. Before he knew it, the Lafourche native was deployed with Operation Desert Storm as a member of the 101st Airborne Division.

"I didn''t even have my furniture yet when they knocked at my door and said we were heading out," Perrillioux recalled. "It was a quick turnaround. I was part of an air defense artillery unit. We had to steer missiles and be prepared to shoot down helicopters or anything else they threw at us."

He served his time and returned home in 1991 where he reunited with his old band mates in Texas. The band toured the U.S. for over a year, opening up for country artists Sammy Kershaw, Martina McBride and others before eventually settling down with his now ex-wife in Nashville, Tenn.

For several years, Perrillioux was OK living the quiet life in Tennessee and Georgia. But when the U.S. was attacked Sept. 11, 2001, he re-enlisted. After another brief stint in Germany as a member of the First Infantry Division, it was back to Iraq.

A shoulder problem eventually forced Perrillioux to change his career track. After his discharge from the Army on Christmas Day in 2007, he returned home for good.

Since then, Kiln, Miss., has been his home. Perrillioux joined Stennis'' National Data Buoy Center.

"We''re part of the National Weather Service," he explained. "We have the yellow buoys out with the transmitters and they measure wind speed and wave height, transmit it to a satellite and back to our headquarters. That information goes to the national headquarters and then to weathermen, like Bob Breck. (I do) anything dealing with supplies and inventory."

The minute his feet hit U.S. soil, Perrillioux vowed to himself to continue pursuing music.

Childhood friend Shane Theriot, who has played with the Neville Brothers, Jewel, Leann Rimes and Boz Scaggs among others, contacted his Raceland pal and offered to help him.

"(Theriot) has his own studio, which is still in the process of being built," Perrillioux said. "He then took me to New Orleans and hooked me up with a studio owned by Better Than Ezra. We spent three days there and got everything accomplished."

He also received input from Doug Belote on drums, Sam Price on bass and Rick English of the Molly Ringwalds on keyboards.

"Those guys were a blessing," Perrillioux said. "Those are some serious heavy-hitters in the local music industry and for them to help me put this CD out is amazing. I''m also thankful to every artist from Lafourche and Terrebonne. After being to the places I''ve been, I''d say the talent is stronger in those two areas than what I''ve seen anywhere."

The Army man-turned-musician writes of his life experiences, which he says his listeners share. Perrillioux touts his favorite song on the album as "24-Hour High," but he says "Soldier On," a song he wrote for his fellow troops, is high on the list as well.

"I think, hands down, ''24-Hour High'' is probably my best work and probably the most appealing to the general public," he said. "When I perform the song, it puts me on a different level. It''s one of the songs that makes me close my eyes and get in the zone.

"When I write, it''s about stuff I''ve experienced or a message that I want to put out to people," Perrillioux said. "It all involves my train of thought and not what I think people want to hear."

Even with his two stints in the military and countless miles traveled, the local boy isn''t ready to call music a full-time career. Perrillioux knows he''s fortunate to be where he is, but says he''s mindful of the challenges ahead.

"It''s a fun, rewarding hobby," Perrillioux said. "My goal is to get distribution. I''ve talked to businesses in Lafourche, Terrebonne and even in Mississippi that are looking to merchandise my CD in their stores. I''m also exploring merchandising with the Army and Navy exchanges. If I can do that, then I will have achieved my goal. It''s all part of having the greatest hobby in the world."
