Details:
Djiva (Jeeva) is Jessie Lloyd, a Murri of the Guugu Yimiddirr (Goo - goo Yim - i - gee) tribe from Cooktown in North Queensland and Della Rae Morrison, a Noongar of the Bibbulman and Wilman Nations of the South West of Western Australia.

“We believe that every life process leaves behind a vibrational residue in the earth, just as a plant leaves behind its image as a seed - so the spirit of every place is bound forever to the memory of its origin.

The indigenous word for this ‘seed power’ or life force is ‘Djiva’ and ‘Djiva’ is the spark that ignites the dormant seed into life.

We hope that people hear that connection to past and future in our music and feel the same spark and spirit.”

Singing in English and Noongar languages, the pair has been performing with their 3 piece band since 2004, releasing their debut EP the same year.

Despite its low key release, the EP received Australia-wide airplay and the band was subsequently featured on ABC TV’s Message Stick.

Invitations from some of Australia’s most prestigious festivals followed, and the band has since performed at the Dreaming Festival, Songlines, Adelaide Fringe, PIAF, Fairbridge and Naidoc Corroboration, and played supports for internationally acclaimed acts Archie Roach, Yothu Yindi and Paul Kelly.

In July 2007 Djiva released their debut full length CD “Yowarliny” (Yow - ar – lin).

Produced by Jessie Lloyd and recorded at Satellite Studios Perth, “Yowarliny” features the talents of some of Western Australia’s finest musicians, including multi-instrumentalist Roy Martinez on fretless bass, guitar and keys, Jade Masters on drums and percussion, Iain Grandage on cello and David Hyams on slide guitar.

The 13 tracks, 12 written by the band and 1 by acclaimed local composer David Milroy, exhibit an earthy sensuality, an independence of spirit and a fresh contemporary feel, and the voices of the two women blend with the ease of old friends, creating a vocal palette rich in colour and texture.

Distinguished throughout by Lloyd’s solid acoustic guitar and dynamic arrangements and the lush layered harmonies of the two women, the songs stir together a mix of flavours from indigenous, country, folk, pop, rock, soul and reggae to create a style which is all their own.

The songs also explore a range of emotions, moods and social and political issues.

Drug use and prostitution feature in ‘Flower Park’, the shame of the Stolen Generation in ‘Moodjebing’ and the impact of gossip on family and community in ‘Talk and Talk’.

‘Wait 4 Me’ calls for healing and tolerance for Aboriginal people, whilst the exquisite ‘Ngank Boodjak’ (Mother Earth), where the English words are echoed in a whispered Noongar translation, speaks of respect for the ancient forests of the South West of Western Australia.

...and there’s plenty of room for tales of love and life in the breezy ‘You’, the uplifting pop hooks of ‘Butterfly’, the celebratory anthem ‘Let It Sing’, the sensual nu-soul of “Oooh!”, and the scorching latin grooves of ‘If It’s Not On’, - an exuberant take on the subject of safe sex.

“Yowarliny is a Noongar word which means ‘to sing or call out’ - and that’s really relevant to us”, the girls explain.

“Our songs are inspired by our lives and our culture - this album is about sharing that culture and those stories with a wider audience and about empowering others to do the same.

We hope to give a strong voice to indigenous women and break down some of the common stereotypes of aboriginal people in general. ”
