Details:
Emmanuelle Gomez is a Vegetarian Savage

Emmanuelle’s musical education began from the womb, where she was audience to her mother’s concert piano and her father’s folk guitar.

Originally from Dunedin, Emmanuelle is a graduate of the Nelson School of Music and Christchurch’s National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art. After the release of her 1997 debut EP In a Piece, Emmanuelle spent 3 years in London working as a session musician and band booker for music promotion and Management Company UP ALL NIGHT, and dragging a piano around on the tube. During this time she recorded demos at Ray Davies Konk studio with Albert Pinherio (Turin Brakes, Beth Gibbons), released her second EP Half a Glass, and also fell in love with the offbeat, earning her dub-stripes in the Brixton dance hall. Returning to New Zealand in 2002, air fare money coming from running a recording project for a less than talented girlfriend of a very rich man, Emmanuelle joined reggae-rock outfit Evolver who built up a solid fan base in and around Dunedin, releasing the Edin EP and video for it’s single Stars in 2004. After Evolver disbanded in 2005, Emmanuelle took some time out from performing live and spent 2 years working as a radio sales executive, whilst fine-tuning her song writing style and giving concerts on her Lipp upright piano to her Labrador in the hallway.

Emmanuelle’s style is best described as folk dub - a little bit quirky and with preclusions to the theatrical, she is inspired by; No Doubt, Feist, Shirley Manson, Elliott Smith and Joni Mitchell. Comparisons are often drawn to Kate Bush and Tori Amos.

In March 2007 Emmanuelle accompanied her new husband and stepson to Poutama in the secluded Mutton Bird Islands, south of the Southwest Cape of Stewart Island, for the annual 2½ month Mutton Bird season. In the rugged and inspiring Poutama forest surrounded by wildlife and the spirits of her Rakiura Maori ancestors, Emmanuelle wrote and demo’d the tracks for her new EP on a pro-tools home studio run off a diesel generator, in between long shifts plucking and gutting the season’s harvest of Titi.

In January 2008 and 7 months pregnant with her daughter, Emmanuelle went into the studio with Dunedin producer/engineer extraordinaire Dale Cotton, to re-record the Mutton Bird Island demo''s and craft them into the Vegetarian Savage EP.
