Ruby’s new record reflects her live sound. “Unlike ‘Velvet Glove,’ there are no big arrangements: it’s simply one voice, one guitar, throughout”. While the stripped back approach is popular with contemporary artists such as Jack Johnson, this project started out by looking back to the era of Karen Carpenter.
“I’m often told I sound like her,” says Ruby, “so I took my inspiration from classic jazz and bossanova songs, such as Burt Bacharach and Antonio Carlos Jobim.” The finished album, ‘Forbidden Fruit’ skilfully interleaves original tracks with covers such as ‘Close To You’ and ‘I’ll never Fall In Love Again’.
