The Fire Thieves is the outlet for the songs of Stephen James Bennett. Bennett first came to public attention in the 1980s as keyboard player and composer in the band LaHost. After the demise of that band, he formed The Fire Thieves who have to date released four albums; ''Slow Dancing in the Big City'', ''Sweet'', ''Clarity'' and the latest album, ''Back to Stereo''. While the early albums were collaborations, ''Back to Stereo'' is an almost completely solo work apart from a couple of guest appearances from LaHost''s guitarist David Valentine-Haggart and Lady Sara on backing vocals. Bennett sings, plays guitars, drums, keyboards and flute on the album which is a smörgåsbord of his pop, jazz, rock, ambient and progressive influences. Apart from The Fire Thieves, Bennett is in the band henry fool with No-Man''s Tim Bowness and is currently working on the follow up to their eponymous debut. He also co-wrote, played and directed videos for Tim Bowness'' solo album ''My Hotel year'' (One little Indian), as well as videos for No-Man, Bowness/Chilvers amongst others.
Other musical collaborations (playing and engineering) include No-Man (Tim Bowness and Porcupine Tree''s Steven Wilson), David Torn (David Bowie) and Giancarlo Erra (No-Sound). Bennett plays drums on Ranja''s album ''Duality'' and sings on the album ''Night Blooms'' from Norwegian collective The Opium Cartel. He has written and produced songs and videos for Swedish chanteuse Lady Sara.
