Details:
In 2002, Chris and his brother Jeff decided to combine their musical tastes and talents. Vertigo Venus was created and they set off to Albuquerque, New Mexico: cheaper than LA and dryer than Seattle. Together, Vertigo Venus delivers a unique sound, combining techno keyboards, metal guitar, high energy electronic drumming and an incredible range of vocal styles.

Originally from Detroit, the MacCanon brothers were active members of the Michigan metal-goth-punk scene since 1995, experimenting with various styles. After years of performing a multitude of instruments in several bands, they decided to become a two-piece, performing all the music themselves.

Their combination of heavy guitar licks, inspired keyboard riffs, and the pulsing beats of an electronic drum machine (drummers are third wheels anyway) are the backbone of this unique duet. Their first CD "Sing Pretty", released in 2004, is the start of showing the world that the combination of new technology and old-fashioned rhythms continues to thrive. This ideal was cemented with a solid following and steady gigs.

From the biting social commentary of "Boob Tube" to the uproariously popular "Punk Rock Cheerleader", Vertigo Venus masterfully displays their versatility. Chris''s fierce metal delivery and Jeff''s wacky pop-punk antics give Vertigo Venus an irresistible stage presence and a one-of-a-kind appeal that complements their sound perfectly.

Here''s a great review from a top promoter in NYC:

When the van arrived in New Mexico in the summer of 2000, it was the realization of a plan to completely start over and wipe the slate entirely clean. Growing up in Motown, just a few miles from Marshall Mathers, Chris and Jeff MacCanon labored for years in the local indy rock scene. Chris led several metal type groups and Jeff was mainly a composer, recording solo piano pieces.

Chris: "At one point we found ourselves in between projects and decided to jam together. It was mainly an interesting way to practice. The next thing we knew the stuff just started clicking. At the time we had recently discovered Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. We both had been listening to it non stop for a couple of months and one day we were talking about how Miles was able to completely break away from all influences to come up with Bitches Brew. At that point we decided to explore ways that we could break out and decided we needed to leave Detroit. We''d passed through New Mexico a few years earlier and we both felt it would be a perfect contrast, and a place where we could both woodshed and try to create something different."

The result is Vertigo Venus, and their first effort, "Sing Pretty!", is a fresh mix of metal, techno and pop with an iconoclastic tone reminiscent of the early Mothers of Invention.

Jeff: "We certainly owe a great deal to Frank Zappa, as do all musicians, whether or not they realize it. In fact, Boob Tube is a pathetic tip of the hat to I''m the Slime from Overnight Sensation."

Indeed this CD contains several examples of VV''s biting commentary from Motor City Molotov, a story about the origins of Devil''s Night in Detroit, to Punk Rock Cheerleader, a Goeth-esque love tragedy about a young couple who meet at a Blink 182 show. Girl of My Dreams, Deep and Cruise tackle alternative sexuality issues with the subtlety of a race riot. Silence is a classic rock anthem in the grand tradition of Alice Cooper''s Welcome to My Nightmare. You''ll hear so many varied influences on this CD, from the techno-pop of Jeff''s keyboards to the ruins of Detroit death metal of Chris'' guitar, all with the undercurrents of their childhood near 8 mile and in the shadows of Motown. They traveled 1600 miles, leaving behind everything to start fresh, to kill The Artist. They risked everything and Sing Pretty! is the result. Hopefully this will only be the first of many great CDs to come.
