Details:
GTRMAN is Dennis Williams – Long time guitar teacher / writer / arranger / composer and the driving force behind the GTRMAN project.
An IQ test taken at an early age indicated a genius level intellect which seemed to be directed towards math and science, but it was the artistic side of Williams which finally allowed that keen intellect to be fully expressed. Not picking the guitar up until he was 18 years old he was definitely behind other players his age. He taught himself guitar by reading books and watching concert videos. He attended music lessons for 3 months and discovered he’d learned 5 years worth of music theory and technique in his first year. From there his ability to learn accelerated to light speed. Never wanting to be the fastest or flashiest guitar player he states that he, “...Just wanted to be a good composer, that’s all, I just want to write good music.”

BLACKENED ( the second release from GTRMAN) turned into the greatest teaching event in his life. The Symphonic Metal Masterpiece boasts blazing guitar solos, mean, aggressive riffing and powerful musical moments usually only found in Orchestras or Symphony’s. It’s also filled with quiet, sombre musical moments that leave you wanting more.

But the journey through BLACKENED was not an easy one. The drummer walked away from the project stating he, “couldn’t play the parts”, written by Williams. So, necessity being the mother of all invention, Williams went to work learning the drums. Watching hours upon hours of video lessons by greats such as Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) and Niel Peart (RUSH) he slowly began to learn the parts he’d written. Listening to the disk one is floored by the technique and skill displayed by this guitar player while behind the kit and ultimately it is one of the things he loves most about this disk.
The Bass player who was lined up to help complete the disk couldn’t make the timings, so once again Williams went to work learning the Bass and recorded the Bass parts in one weekend.
The final piece of the puzzle was finding a keyboard player / pianist. While searching for the right guy to fill the position he found himself sitting by his piano one night trying to figure out how he would explain to the keyboardist what he wanted. He began to play a few chords he’d figured out from the guitar and a few hours later he’d written the song “Lost and Undiscovered Soul” which, according to Williams, “is almost a miracle because I can’t play piano, period. But that song almost came out on its own...I recorded it that same night... I still can’t believe I played it!”
The remainder of the piano’s and keyboards (string sections / horns / orchestra) were also handled by Williams once he had the confidence to play the parts. His ability to arrange symphony parts and orchestral parts along side of straight ahead metal is another hidden talent he never knew he had. He seems to know just where each piece of the musical puzzle logically seems to go.

The final product is one of immense power and grandeur...the technical proficiency is staggering, the melodies are instantly pleasing and ultimately this project stands as a masterpiece of instrumental perfection!

BLACKENED is like a work or art, something that needs to be explored many times to actually get and appreciate all the parts. If you’re into music that is above the norm, technical yet melodic, powerful and deeply emotional then BLACKENED is for you.

A progressive rock masterpiece that is sure to be a mainstay in your CD player.
