Biography
David Waddell was born in South Carolina to a family who staunchly believed the most important things in life were the Good Lord, Family, hard work and playing music. At age 9 he bought his first instrument with the money he made shining shoes at the local barbershop.
He started his musical career at the tender age of 14 playing drums in the day band at the Bowery in Myrtle Beach South Carolina, a juke joint open from 9AM to 1 in the morning with live entertainment ranging from strippers to fire eaters. There he played with a band called Wild Country, better known today as Alabama.
At 15 he was playing trumpet for The Platters.
He played R&B and Rock & Roll in the local clubs for the next few years when he was "discovered" by a music manager who moved the band to Austin.
While in Austin he played The Armadillo World Headquarters, The One Night and The Black Queen with Johnny Winter to mention a few.
He moved on to Nashville where he met, played and recorded with Townes Van Zandt, Alan Rhody, Billy Joe Shavers , J.D. Sumner & the Stamps, Stella Parton, Kathy Matea, Pat McLaughin, Marshall Chapman and J.J Cale who he later toured with and played bass on J.J. Cale''s Polygram album "#8".It was at this time he started writing songs with peer like Billy Ray Reynolds, Hoy Lindsey, Bobby Whitlock of Derek & the Dominoes fame.
Billy Joe Shaver asked him to play bass with his band for a weekend gig in Austin where he ended up staying for 20 years. During this time he was a permanent member of Lonny Mack''s band, Townes Van Zandt''s band and Shaver''s band. While touring with Billy Joe they co-wrote Mother Trucker which was recorded on Shaver''s "Highway of Life" album. The song remains a Shaver fan favorite.
David started playing the songwriter circuit as a solo act where he met "Blaze Foley", and a strong bond was formed. They put together a trio with drummer brother "Leland Waddell" and recorded "Live at the Outhouse" which was voted #9 of the top 100 Texas recordings of all time by the "Austin Chronicle". Blaze introduced the "Waddell Brothers" to "Calvin Russell" and they invited him to sing in their band "The Characters". David and Leland produced an album titled "The Character''s Act I". They played it for "Townes Van Zandt" because they had recorded his classic song "Nothin''".
Townes sent a tape to a friend at "Line Records" in Munich, Germany. They released it and a following fan base began in Europe. "Patrick Mateau" president of "New Rose Records" out of Paris, France heard the record and signed the band to a deal under the name "Calvin Russell Band". They recorded 5 records and spent most of the next 6 years in Europe, returning to Texas to record.
Tired of the road and wanting to get away from the sideman gig, David settled down in Austin to concentrate on his own material, although he returned to tour Europe as a solo act occasionally.
Together with Leland, they formed the Waddell Brothers band and played the Austin club circuit to a dedicated fan base.
David has recently spent time in Nashville and co-produced the new Townes Van Zandt release
"In the Beginning" on TVZ/Compadre records.
Last One to Know is the debut offering of these wonderful and heartfelt songs from an artist that should have been out front a long time ago.
