"Eno Goes Toontown..."
I don''t need Bush, you don''t need Bush, but here''s what we all need, and I make you not: Guessing from the cover of America''s Favorite Award Winning Tunes by Mark Wheaton (Catasonic), with its Lord Krsna-meets-Korla Panit photo, you''d figure the tuneage within might be some artsy-fartsy "po-mo" take on swizzle-stick exotica a la Arthur Lyman. Instead, imagine what would happen if Negativeland and Danny Elfman collaborated on the soundtrack to some lost prewar Eastern European cartoon version of the wicked witch and flying monkey segments from the Wizard of Oz. Yep, this is strange and wonderful stuff. Normally I don''t go in for synth records, but the selections on Award Winning Tunes --- composed as backgrounds for performance-art pieces and cut between 1980-1994 at Wheaton''s home studio --- have a textural resonance uncommon to the genre: Sirens fade in and out of filmnoirish washes; faux-accordions swerve around faux-gamelan pylons; Eno goes to toontown, plays the ponies, bets on the lobster and wins bigtime.
