Details:
Mary Wheelan, founder of the Rhode Island Songwriters Association, now resides in Western Massachusetts. Mary is now the President of the Hilltown Alliance of Musicians and Songwriters, Inc.(HAMS). Feel free to e-mail Mary for more information about this new organization based in the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. You need not live in a hilltown to participate.

Some of Mary''s songs have been included on complilation albums released by Mad Mackerel Music, Providence MusicWorks, and Fast Folk Musical Magazine. Mary also recorded a demo but this is Mary''s first full length recording project.

Mary was a semi-finalist in the 1995 Austin Songwriters Group contest for a jazz song she co-wrote (not a common genre for Mary). She has performed at many venues throughout New England including: the songwriter showcase stage at the Newport Folk Festival, Providence''s First Nite, Smith College, the Newport Peace Festival, Eddy Arts Festival, Bell Street Chapel Coffeehouse, Hear In R.I. Festivals, AS220 Women''s Coffeehouses, RISA Showcase at Stonesoup Coffeehouse, etc. She has on several occasions joined forces with Strong Oak in a presentation of "Sings In The Night," which includes stories by Strong Oak interspersed with drumming and songs by Mary.

Sean Reagan, a reporter from the Daily Hampshire Gazette, recently stated in an article about a recent performance that "Wheelan''s voice, alternating between sweet croons and bluesy moans, mesmerized the audience." Another reviewer once described one of Mary''s performances as "introspective" and "uplifting." Mary views creative energy as a healing force which she brings into her life, her work, her writing, and her music. Recently she donated a copy of her C.D., "Creek at Crack of Dawn," to the library at NELCWIT (New England Learning Center for Women in Transition), an agency that provides services to women who are survivors of sexual abuse and/or domestic violence. A survivor, who had borrowed the C.D., said that knowing Mary was able to use music in a healing way helped her to use music for her own healing process. More than money, more than applause, this is the kind of feedback that means the most to Mary.
