An Evening in the Smokies by the Woodpickers
(Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN) -The Woodpickers and friends compact disk has completed production and is now available. Ken Voorhis, Executive Director of Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont is also a band member of the Woodpickers. Ken says "This project is a culmination of a number years of writing, practicing, recording and producing music that speaks the from and about the Smokies. This collection is a mix of traditional tunes that were brought to the Smokies by the first white settlers and new originals that reflect the sense of place that is felt by those who visit these mountains today."
"I consider myself an eclectic listener of music meaning, I enjoy all types music. I have this radio listening pattern that I use in order to get it all in," states Kent Jones, public relations specialist for Tremont. "When I got my Woodpickers CD and heard it for the first time I realized how special it is. Not just because there''s a lot of the Smoky Mountains in there but because of it purveying a deeper message within the music. It''s presentation is entertaining and so delightful to listen to. I think it is very good but I may be partial so I challenge people to get a CD and listen for themselves."
An Evening in the Smokies boasts a bevy of twenty-one tracks. There are 11 traditional songs, and 10 tracks of original first recorded releases of music written by the members Woodpickers and friends. Other notable friends and collaborators on the CD include Jeremy Lloyd, who has two CDs of his original tunes himself, and plays upright bass, mandolin, and electric guitar on numerous tunes. Steve Kaufmann and Nancy Brennan-Strange join Ken on the tune the Voice Of the Smokies. The Woodpickers friends all had instrumental or vocal parts on the CD. The composition of the music on the CD is folk/mountain music genre.
Core members of the Woodpickers band are Ken Voorhis, John Richardson, Richard Hilten and Jeanie Hilten. Jeanie Hilten is administrative officer for Great Smoky Mountains National Park''s Discover Life in America and long-time friend of and past program director at Tremont. Ken states, "The proceeds from CD purchases go to provide scholarships for Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont programs. This gives young people the chance to come to the Smokies and experience it in-depth. There are so many other programs available to both children and adults here at Tremont. To have a homegrown CD with original music about where we live and work is another way to say thank you to those who make Tremont what it is today. I personally want to thank my fellow musicians. And all of those who have found a home in the Smokies who will enjoy this CD." Ken says, "I hope along with the listening enjoyment, that those who purchase the CD get satisfaction of being a part of making it possible for a kid to attend Tremont."
