Details:
Just a couple of years ago, a bunch of women got together to play drums as women drummers. Some of us never touched a drum and, some had played drums for years, and some were so excited that pots and pans would have been all a drummer needed.
We began to play under the direction and teaching of Carole Ann Burris. A year after playing once or twice a month for a couple of hours each time, 4 of us met at Deb''s house. There was scheming going on. With much enthusiasm, nachos and tea and improvisational drumming, we decided to get serious! - Oh ... my... wasn''t that a mistake! First we had to figure out WHO would be invited to drum, then we had to figure out WHERE we could drum and make some big noise and who''s partners would not be offended by the rattling of windows and the uncontrollable laughter that would become the reason we continued to move forward in a world which sees few women forming a percussion group - a drum group made exclusively of women drummers.
Carole Ann continues to be the musical director bringing us a wealth of musical knowledge, ability, & songwriting. You can hear original music by Carole Ann on our first CD Walk Me To The Edge.
We chose to play traditional drum rhythms primarily from Africa, Cuba and the middle east which had a theme running through most of them of women. These rhythms are played on the djembe, jdun jdun ( pronounced june june), kinkeni, and songban, bells, & clave.
Each of us has something to say and offer to the collective, we write, sing, interpret, create, and have an amazing time making music. Check out our most recent CD Walk Me To The Edge including several original pieces in addition to some traditional rhythms.
There is such a deep moving in the belly, when we play. Women dance, as old ancient places are tapped into and are given new birth in our audiences.
We love playing!
If you want us to come to your area, call your local clubs, and promoters and let them know that you want to see WombBOOM! perform.

When the women of WombBOOM! strap on their drum... this is what one listener said:
"I have never seen the likes of you. Women who groove, who make me move, who soar, who tempt, who remind me that I am older than my years and have heard these rhythms many times in many lives. Thanks beyond words. ...Renee/Canada"
Carole Anne Burris is on keyboards and percussion as the musical director of the group. Christy Jefferson''s honest, , clear, story telling vocals along with Cori Sandler''s interpretation of the unguarded ballad, her liquid, somewhere between gut wrenching blues and soaring tantaric vocalizing leave you on the edge of your seat. Jessie Steinberg breaths life into her didgeridoo, taking audiences on a walk about to some mystical rhythmical land and this journey is grounded by the steady, body rocking, imaginative, tight as all ... beat of the drum - Deb Parent and Stacey Michener weave their jembe''s and djun djun''s throughout the performance, holding it all together, honoring those women that have come before.
Invited as the featured artists and bringing a full house in Kingston, Ont. to their feet at DRUM EXTRAVAGANZA, followed by the official launch of their premier CD "Walk Me To The Edge" on January 31/2004 in Toronto, Ont., WombBOOM mesmerized, and stirred up the primal knowingness in all who will attended (a standing room only event) This women''s rhythm ensemble, brought to world music and to their audiences what can only be described as a visceral reaction and understanding of rhythm.
