The son of a golden glove fighter, and pianist who grew up near the historic eighteenth and vine district in Kansas City, Mo. A concrete finisher turned bread maker raised Wardell Jr., his brother and sister in the quiet subdivision of Ruskin Heights, in Kansas City, MO. His fathers rough exterior and rigorous work ethic had a profound impact on him as a youth. Inherited his fathers passion for playing the piano he soon discovered that he could write songs as well! Nevertheless, it was his mother, who raised him the church and were he was deeply influence by gospel music. He professed his faith in Christ at an early age at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, . Writing and performing his first song, "Thanking God for Her" on Mothers Day.
At six years old, he began playing the piano, writing, and performing with his cousins, singing gospel music, and popular songs around church and social events. At the age of sixteen, he and a few friends formed a band called Element 2 and from there his pursuits of the dream began. At East High School, where Eddie Griffith was a classmate, he performed with the band. He left for the United States Regular Army where his songwriting ability won him many awards. Playing in various bands and ensembles on the west coast and Korea, he continued to write tunes like Everlasting love, Give Peace a Chance and I Guess I''ll Keep Dreaming On.
After leaving the Army in May of 1985, he returns to Kansas City to form a Quintet Vocal Group Called Just Us Friends. A group of friends and musicians that he grew up with from the "Hood". The group transcended many times but he continued to write such gospel songs as Do You Believe, He''s Alright and Mansion in the Sky to name a few. After producing his first project in 1993 called He''s Alright, the group broke up in 1995 while working on his second project. He felt God calling Him into the ministry and accepted that calling on August 8, 1995. His ministering of the Word was strong and full of fire. Nevertheless, he felt the need to start playing the piano again so he began playing for a local gospel female singing sextet group called the Women of Faith in April of 2000.
He began writing songs again and this time he has more passion in his songs, more energy, and a better understanding of who he is. With songs like Do It for Me, Clean Heart and Jehovah Hear My Prayer. The group added men to it and changed their name to "Faith". He is now working on his current project "Mansion in the Sky".
His musical influences go back to his High Schools days, Earth, Wind, And Fire, Stevie Wonder, Commodores, The Dobbie Brothers, Teddy Pendergrass, Isley Brothers and Bloodstones (who his cousin Willis Draffen played guitar for), and B.B. King, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Chico Marx, Walter Hawkins, James Cleveland, Mattie Moss Clark, The Dixie Hummingbirds, James Cleveland, Thomas Dorsey, Earl Klugh, Grover Washington. To Luther Vandross, Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Kenny Rogers, Garth Brookes, Miles Davis, Kenny G, David Sanborn, Santana, SOS Band. Many Gospel writers and artist like the Hawkins, Winans, Kirk Franklin, Kirk Whalen, Yolanda Adams, Dottie Peoples, Dawkins & Dawkins, and Trinity 5/7.
