Don''t feel bad if you''ve never heard of the local rock band Fever Sleeves.
All right, so the San Diego-bred group''s been around for almost five years. And the guys have a rehearsal space at the prestigious Black Box Recording Studios in Golden Hill.
They even have an amazing music video that features an animated ghost climbing in and out of famous album covers.
But still.
“We weren''t really for real until a few years ago,” said guitarist Nick Lorentz.
The childhood friends are the first to admit they''ve been taking things a bit slow. But only because they''ve been at college studying science or working day jobs at law firms.
But that''s going to change.
“I mean, it''s not like we''ve just been hanging out,” said vocalist Tony Gidlund. “We''ve been continuously working on songs. It''s both hurt and helped us because we have a lot of material, but we also have time to go back and obsess about every little thing.”
Listening to the Fever Sleeves'' soon-to-be-released album, “Soft Pipes, Play On,” it''s obvious these musicians are perfectionists.
The songs have a meandering, post-rock kind of feel – imagine a messy Built to Spill or less technical No Knife with a lot more wiggle room. There are tracks, for example, that border on heavy metal, complete with grunts and demon voices. Others play with the softer, atmospheric touches of The Album Leaf.
It took a year to complete the album, which was recorded at Black Box. And now that it''s ready to be released, the band is stepping up its game.
“I think what''s next is that we want people to know we''re here, we''re weird, and we fear no beer,” Szafranski said.
