2-Scratcher Blues---- Definitely anyone’s nightmare that owns a tattoo-finding the wrong poser Tat artist that doesn’t know his craft can be ugly. Fristoe’s expression in this tune haunts you with piercing guitar licks and vocal harmonies that are right on--this one is classic.
3- Indelible---- Magical guitar work taking you through a maze of descriptions of a beautiful Tat girl- “She’s indelible, incredible”….Wow
4-Mother Art----Beautiful song sharing the passion of the art of tattoo. This song has a Jimi Hendrix feel to it in it’s melodic lead guitar--they were friends at one time--the story is on our website along with many other Fristoe stories about his life travels.
5-Tribal Revival---- Now this one takes you on a trip through the ancient times of tattoo history with the help of Fristoe’s unpatentable guitar-very impressive--the harmonies and the structure of this song rings true with the sound CSN&Y used so successfully in their compositions----Good Job -
6- Tasmanian Devil-This is truly a funny song--Fristoe told to me the story behind this one--it seems that at one time everyone, well not everyone, but a lot of people demanded the Tasmanian Devil for their body artwork. Fristoe describes a night at a local dancehall where he met the girl of his dreams and her tattoo comes alive --Tasmanian Devil--“Here he Comes Again”---a lot of fun
7- We Fall Into The Sky-(Becoming A Vampire)--This one is my favorite of Fristoe’s compositions-It’s about this guy that discovers he’s become a vampire with the girl he loves--it’s damn exciting--Fristoe’s vocals and guitar work-well I can’t say enough about this one --this song belongs with a hit movie-and probably will be someday --“so now we make our way through the night and not by day”- I just can’t get enough of this one..... o -
8-Don’t Come Home Cold---has a kind of Joe Walsh / Tom Petty feel to it with it’s sassy lyrics and straight ahead guitar--- “Baby don’t go to town and come home cold” -That kind of says it all -it’s about relationships -- and we’ve all tried one of them at one time or another….Good Song -
9-Talk To me Tina-- “ How can anything that makes me feel so good make me feel so bad”-- Ladies pay attention to this one--a question I have wondered about for a long time--Fristoe again does another great job stirring up the love pot with his lashing lyrics and ever present streaming guitar licks. -
10-Now You Know Me-- This song has a wide open feel that is somewhat similar to Pink Floyd’s expression in vocals and arrangements. The only thing Floyd did not have in their recordings was Fristoe’s guitar. I can only imagine what that combination would sound like. Well here’s Fristoe without Pink Floyd… -
11- Any More Love-- Sounds like a love song that was written by a lead guitar player with good hooky lyrics that will have you singing in the shower-- and once again that unforgettable Fristoe guitar. -
12-Ode To A Farmer- You know we picked this song-which is not part of the Tattunes Family but a good song that shows Fristoe’s true Southern Roots. As you can tell by the title, this tune is about farmers-- and who can truly say that somewhere back in their own heritage line there wasn’t a farm family kin to you. One that helped develop this country by taking the not so easy road of farm life. But a road that was very important to the growth of our nation. in Atlanta, Georgia and resides now in Athens, Georgia. He has been a musician all his life, and for many years racked up opening acts for the likes of The Allman Brothers, Feetwood Mac,Little Feat,JethroTull, John Prine,Amboy Dukes, Vanilla Fudge, Wet Willie and many others. As a session player Fristoe has added his talented guitar style to many classic hits from artist such as Tommy Roe, Billie Joe Royal ,Joe South , Alicia Bridges ,Starbuck ,Bertie Higgins (Key Largo) -WOW--
Fristoe shared a story about him and Bruce Springsteen, before Bruce was Bruce...Anyway a friend of Fristoe’s, George Mitchell brought Bruce to Piedmont Park, in Atlanta, where Fristoe’s band opened for the Allman Brothers Band. After the show George came over to Fristoe and introduced Bruce as his songwriter friend. Fristoe told me that his guitars were all packed up so they sat in the park passing back and forth Bruce’s black acoustic Guild guitar, sharing their own compositions. Bruce told Fristoe that he wanted to find an electric guitar that had the feel of an acoustic guitar, so he can start playing lead with his songs--Fristoe said “well that’s an easy one-- do like they do in Nashville try a Telecaster” . And history was made by Springsteen with a Telecaster I hope Bruce reads this.
You have to understand that being from Atlanta myself, but for many years now in Southern Cal, I knew of Fristoe and his amazing feel for the guitar. But it wasn’t until I started asking questions and taking notes that I learned how deeply rooted he is in the music scene in the south. Fristoe had private jamming sessions with Duane Allman, Ted Nugent, Lowell George, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Jimmy Hall .
Being an all around musician Fristoe also engineered a live tour for the Indigo Girls, produced Kristin Hall (formally a member of Sugarland),her first album , sang backup for Kerry Livgren ( lead guitar player for Kansas) first solo album. Fristoe also worked for many years for the Atlanta based company, The Lowery Group-owned by the legendary late publisher Bill Lowery-- who once referred to Fristoe, to a visiting colleague from New York , as the best session player in the country…..
While at The Lowery Group Fristoe wrote songs with the also legendary Buddie Buie ( writer of Stormy and Spooky for The Classics Four) and Ronnie Hammond ( lead singer for the Atlanta Rhythm Section ). Sharpening his writing skills with some of the best in the business. Oh yeh I almost forgot --- Fristoe told me about when he was just a pup. He was out playing lead guitar for a band on the Chitlin’ Circuit. Well it turns out while playing the same clubs as Sam and Dave and Otis Redding they all shared conversation and mutual respect.
Almost done here but I would like to share with you something of why I took on this project on. Back in 1996 Atlanta hosted the Olympics and Fristoe was working with the- IATSE LOCAL 927-ATLANTA on the audio crew at this celebration of life, in his hometown. Well you guessed it he was working the main stage at Centennial Park and during the Jack Mack and The Heart Attack performance (when the bomb went off) causing Fristoe as well as many of others that day a change in life. But smiling he said that the bright light of the whole experience of the Olympics was setting up for Ray Charles -keyboard and mic and later on meeting him backstage, telling him what an honor it was to set up for him. Ray smiled and said “ Thank You John” ……. from one Southern Gentleman to another. By finding Fristoe again in my life I am truly happy to have had this experience of going down this road with him. So if you ever get the chance to listen to Fristoe I promise---you won’t be sorry,----and you can hold me to that Robb Corless Sr President Southern Ash Entertainment
