Swamp Yankees is an album of original songs by Jim Boyce, 3 recorded in 1998 and 7 recorded in 2008. They range from fiddle tune waltzes to Cajun rumbas, so it’s hard to explain the genre, but it has a lot of fiddling.
The musicians on the album are local performers, who joined him for a few sessions. Linda Dougherty (now Dias) on fiddle performs contemporary folk as Dias and Dias with her husband, Manny. Amy Larkin on fiddle and her husband Jonathan Larkin on accordion head the Buzzard''s Bayou Cajun & Zydeco Dance Band. John Alden on bass plays in the trio Three Cats and a Dog. Ted Fil on banjo plays in the Joe Sutton band. Charles Cann on dobro plays with the Falmouth Fiddlers. Jim Boyce on fiddle, mandolin, and guitar founded the Falmouth Fiddlers. Ursula Boyce (Jim’s wife) on guitar plays with the Falmouth Fiddlers.
Jim has been singing all his life, and writing songs most of it, so here is a sampling of his own songs in his own voice. He made the guitar, the mandolin and the fiddle that he plays.
He wrote “The Tides of Love” years ago when he wished the bike path would extend all the way to North Falmouth. It was inspired by fellow musicians and bikers – and the bike path has finally arrived.
“He wrote lyrics to an old fiddle tune named “Jessica’s Waltz”, so that became Jessica’s (Fisherman) Waltz”. “Bluegrass Boogie” is from when he was in a country-western band.
“The Fish Song” is his ideal of happiness. “Petit Caillou” is his adaptation of “Grand Mamou” – no one could recognize it so he renamed it and called it his own. It is a tribute to Chauvin, LA, and “The Alligator Song” also shows his enthusiasm for Louisiana. “Cajun Thing” is about a narrow escape from a wonderful time.
“Hilda, Hilda” was inspired by a drawing in a children’s book, but it’s about the sad state of abusive relationships. “The Mighty Buffalo” is his tribute to a vanquished time, and “Big Mouth” was his advice to himself.
