Welcome to Andalucia, Spain; the land of Picasso, Velazquez, Garcia Lorca, bull fighting, sunny beaches , majestic mountains, great food and wine, flamenco music, Roman, Moorish, Phoenician and Iberian culture, and yes…….progressive blues! This seems at first a bit odd but when you hear this recording you will realize that music truly is the international language. The musicians on this CD are some of the finest I’ve ever played with even though I have had the pleasure of playing with some of the best in the business, RL Burnside, Jimmy Carl Black, Louisiana Red, Jerry Portnoy, and Frank Frost, et al.
Pepe Bao is on bass. He is the most prolific bass player in Spain today and a bandleader in his own right. He plays jazz fusion, rock, flamenco and just about anything on the bass. I was totally surprised and flattered when he suggested that we make a CD together.
Alvaro Gandul, a child prodigy, is on keys. He has been with Raimundo Amador since he was a teenager. He is a great musician, deeply rooted in rock, flamenco and classical music. Alvaro is also a fantastic arranger and studio engineer.
Quique Porras is on drums. We had our first band together in 1976. Quique was already playing cha,cha,cha, rumba, boleros, paso doble and Spanish pachanga music in professional bands at thirteen. He loves rock and funk and he caught the blues disease when he met me.
I’m really honored to have Raimundo Amador on lead guitar on three tracks. Raimundo is a living legend in Spain. Raimundo is a full-blooded Gypsy from Seville. Raimundo learned the flamenco guitar from his father and uncle and started playing on the street at 12. He cut his first 45 for Columbia Records at 15 and recorded his first LP with two more Spanish music legends: Rafael Amador (Raimundo’s brother) and Kiko Veneno. The band and the LP were called Veneno, one of the first recordings mixing rock and flamenco. Raimundo later recorded with his highly successful band, Pata Negra, which he formed with his brother, Rafael. Raimundo went solo in the ‘90’s and had even more success. His biggest seller was a CD recorded live in Madrid called, Noche de Flamenco y Blues. BB King guests on this CD and can also be heard on Raimundo’s Gerundina CD. Raimundo also plays on the epic flamenco CD, La Leyenda del Tiempo by Spain’s greatest flamenco singer, Camaron de la Isla. Raimundo has shared the stage or recorded with international recording artists BB King, Paco de Lucia, Camaron de la Isla, El Cigala, Ketama, Santana, Dickey Betts, and countless others.

¡Bienvenidos a Andalucía, España; la tierra de Picasso, Velazquez, García Lorca, la corrida, playas soleadas, montañas majestuosas, cocina mediterránea y vino bueno, y también…el blues progresivo! Esto puede aparecer un poco extraño al principio pero cuando se escuche esta grabación se dará cuenta que la música es verdaderamente la lengua internacional.
Ha sido una sorpresa cuando Pepe Bao me acerco’ con la idea de grabar un CD junto con el. Es el mejor bajista que jamás he conocido y un personaje prolífico en España.
Quique Porras toca la batería. Es un músico sólido que conozco desde los ’70. Álvaro Gandul toca las teclas. Es un honor para mí tener Raimundo Amador como artista invitado en tres temas. Esta leyenda de flamenco y Rock Andaluz es un monstruo de la guitarra que enciende al público cada vez que suba al escenario. Camino de Sanlucar fue grabado en el pueblo de Tomares, en la provincia de Sevilla en Junio 2008. Este CD esta grabado totalmente en directo y sin “overdubs”.
Las canciones: “Crazy Over You” es un pequeño rock ‘n’ roll mío que he compuesto especialmente para este CD. “Look Watcha Done” es un tema del gran Magic Sam que tengo en el repertorio desde hace años. Destaca el estilo “West Side” que estoy tocando con el Fender Stratocaster. Estoy tocando el slide guitar en “Never Make Your Move Too Soon”, un tema grabado también por Ry Cooder y BB King. Álvaro brilla en este tema con un solo de piano muy guapo. “Jump Back Baby” es otro tema mío. Raimundo encienda esta canción con un punteo ardiente mientras que yo esté tocando la guitarra rítmica con un ritmazo funky. Pepe añade un bajo bellísimo en este tema. “Shuckin’” es un instrumental mío con un feeling jazzero. Destaca la guitarra mía y el piano de Álvaro. Raimundo brilla de nuevo con un punteo impresionante en “As the Years Go Passing By”, un tema de Albert King. “Down in Virginia” es una canción de Jimmy Reed. Yo estoy tocando la guitarra con la armónica “en el soporte” en este tema. “Everybody’s Gotta Change” es pura fuerza eléctrica. La sección rítmica está ardiendo en este tema. “Cryin’ Won’t Help You” es un viejo tema de Tampa Red. Estoy tocando la armónica y guitarra al mismo tiempo (con el soporte). Estoy es un detalle que llevo años haciendo, tocando las mismas notas con la guitarra y la armónica simultáneamente. “Pretty Baby” es un tema de Junior Parker. Normalmente un Chicago blues, hemos metido un aire tejano en este tema. Todo el mundo conoce “The Thrill Is Gone”. Raimundo tenía ganas de grabar este tema por su amistad con BB King. Raimundo puntea primero, luego yo y al final del tema hay una pequeña “guerra de guitarras” entre Raimundo y yo. El último tema, “Camino de Sanlucar” es un instrumental mío.
