Barrelfish

Remember bands? Not a front man (or woman) with backup musicians - but music that is made from the collective creative effort of all involved? Barrelfish has returned to that organic type of collaboration. Whether you call it range rock, alt-country, or just melodic rock and roll, Barrelfish is doing it a bit differently. Continuing against the norm, there is not one, not two, but three lead vocalists in the band (Get your minds around that, pigeonholing music types), and all five members share writing duties. A band of seasoned performers with decades of touring experience, Barrelfish is the distillation of such notable Bay Area acts as Grey Matter, Legal Reins, Squeeze the Dog, Cottonhead, The Jazzmen and SUTN house band.

Joe: Through childhood, Joe received years of daily inoculations of Johnny Cash vinyl. This has not only influenced his songwriting, but given his voice a natural "twang" that he has given up trying to shake. Joe takes lead vocals on many songs, as well as creating the complex layers of guitars on "Haunt Away".

Jeff: A quick wit that easily serves up sharp one liners or cutting observations, Jeff is the "cigarette and whiskey" voiced lead singer of Barrelfish. Happy to jump from acoustic, electric and Rickenbacker electric 12 string, it is Jeff who plays the tasty lap steel in "Tiny Hands".

Julie: Barrelfish''s musical femme fatale, Julie delivers a powerful double punch on lead vocals and keyboards. Classically trained, Julie can deliver from opera to honky tonk. Check out her ethereal Hammond B3 solo on "Pull the Stars".

Damien: Elevating the electric bass from a role of simple instrument, Damien produces the wonderful counter melodies in Barrelfish''s broad sound. In addition, Damien is the Bacchus that every band should have, a free spirit who is still utterly devoted to the band (so long as we don''t gig during Burning Man). And if three vocalists aren''t enough, he is quick to jump to the mike. That''s him adding his talent to the background part of "Concrete Under Your Skin".

Steve: Ever the purist, it is drummer Steve as quality control that keeps the band organic. Steve is the "tap root" of the band, his spot-on musical instincts having been honed by his own musical journey: he studied cello, then guitar, bass, and finally drums. Steve understands melody, and holds down the "less is more" approach that serves as the bedrock to the Barrelfish sound. Listen closely and you''ll hear Steve''s cello on the song "Again".
